If its as out there we would know, by a sentinel test or a physician initiated one.

If it's out there asymptomatically

I don't think it's possible to be out there asymptomatically on any large scale. About 10% of cases need hospital treatment. So if we haven't got any new hospitalizations, we can conclude there probably aren't 10 cases out in the community.

I am just amazed at the ongoing western-centricity of the news media reporting on COVID. Brazil passed 1 million cases yesterday and their government is, to put it mildly, not exactly a flash one, so they will be stuffed. Russia is in big trouble with Putin's regime long accused of hiding the extent of cases. On and on one can go. The news to be frank is very bleak in many places.

Media being douche: "Returning travellers are outraged after hopping on a bus they thought was going to Auckland's CBD for managed quarantine - but ended up in Rotorua."

So what?

Personally I would not be outraged. Four and a half hours on a bus after a flight maybe? That would not feel good tho.

This will be challenging as we have strong trade and people links to many of these places. Any sensible first world country needs to look at how to assist.

Do we have the capacity to manage this big increase safely? I understand the auditing of the hotels doesn’t even start until next month

Its full so using Rotorua, and elsewhere. Over 4200 in place now I guess that will grow and will settle on a 14 day cycle until the incoming ease back. Doesnt matter where they go as long as they are secure and tested Day 3 and Day 13. Then imported cases are a non issue for us. If they remain out of general circulation, we will be fine. All this is expected, but for some reason some seem to think its already eliminated, so problem solved, now its back. No idea why.

The further they go, the more likely they will need to stop the bus for toilet breaks, and food/drink etc. If we don't have that many suitable hotels in Auckland, and the ones we have got are full I wouldn't have thought there are going to be a vast quantity of  others in the north island that maybe suitable.

People returning shouldn't be a an issue, but that has shown to be a big 'if'. We were previously assured the border was watertight when it wasn't. WE don't want to repeat history again with this virus. I can see us going back to level 2 in a few weeks , or potentially being asked to wear masks. and take more precautions.

I also noticed Covid Unit TV ads on tv tonight.  I don't recall seeing any previously while in level 1.

rotavegas now a quarantine center

Wellington has been as well with the Avatar crew. I think we are going to end up with quarantine centres around NZ, as numbers returning ramp up. IO am not sure if it is necessarily an issue if as well as there aren't any leaks. But I do think covid hot spots should be put in quarantine, rather than just managed isolation, due to being far more risk. eg countries like the US, UK, or india. Or maybe require they do 14 days of isolation first at their end. Or even a covid test at their end.

So what?

To be fair, there's been some accusations that, for example, these people weren't warned so they could go to toilet ahead of time etc. It's not a terrible injustice or anything but I can see why some of them are a bit bitter. But it is also what it is -- the 5 million+ others' interests has to come ahead of their minor inconvenience.

Hopefully there is a toilet on the bus as well. Otherwise I guess it will using the bush or side of the road, so noone comes in contact with public facilities.

The MoH claimed (now whether one is inclined to believe some of the details given recent events is another matter) that there was a designated toilet stop for those people to go and that the facilities were to be cleaned immediately afterwards. At least that is what I read.

Is is concerning too

Isolation called a shambles after 'packed' trip and delayed test

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300039363/isolation-called-a-shambles-after-packed-trip-and-delayed-test

Why are we moving people who are part way through isolation, and then mixing them with other people who are at various stages of isolation? It is just maddness IMO if true. I hope it is not Level 2 or 3, here we come.

You know what would be a shocking headline:

Quarantined happy, not complaining

Scientists unable to explain sudden acts of putting needs of society above their personal needs

Why should it matter if they're in Auckland? Want to stay in Auckland? Fine. You'll be put on the next outgoing air flight.

I don't recall any leper colonies being in large central cities.

If I was in charge, they'd be in 15 warehouses on military bases, with guarded doors and gates.

Each day new arrivals would be placed in a new warehouse, based on a rotating schedule.

If you were infected, you'll be pulled from the general population, and put into a hospital warehouse.

Post a Youtube video saying "this is what you'll be doing for two weeks, otherwise don't bother flying here. Are you rich, powerful, play with boats, making a film, or otherwise used to special treatment? Well, in New Zealand everyone gets the same treatment. Don't like it? Hope you're happy somewhere else."

Any arriving plane would need to show the video as part of their inflight safety check. Throughout the video warn anyone staying on the plane means they have consented.

Teddy bears, pacifiers, cribs, diapers will be supplied. Primarily for the adults, they'll also be given to children.

Want visits from your friends and family? Feel free to use the teleconference software on your supplied laptop.

Special dietary needs? 12 different tubs of complete nutrition shakes are supplied with distilled water.

You stay for free, and at the end you're given passage anywhere in the country.

Job done.
