Looks like the campaign is back on.

I just had a govt sponsored post appear on facey that has comments starting at about 1PM reminding what level 1 entails and preparation steps

The TV reminders shouldn't really have stopped totally

Supposed to be heading down to Queenstown the week after next but SWMBO is wondering whether we should.

That seems to have gone quiet today.

I saw my first TV ad tonight. It also mentioned using the App and recording where you visit. Based on the stats, hardly anyone seems to use it, and I have found it to be poor, mixed with barely anyone having a QR code in my area. Education on safe use of masks could also be an idea, because when/if we get some community cases, and an area has to be locked down, mask usage will  likely be a requirement.

Is there a problem? are we thinking there is community tranmission?

(NB both are genuine questions)

Yup, Diplomats are low risk - NOT!

From news,com.au

August 2, 2020

Qld case 'given exemption' to fly: report

The man to test positive for COVID-19 after flying into Queensland via NSW reportedly works in the diplomatic corps.

According to the ABC, the man who flew from Afghanistan's capital of Kabul to Sydney but was given an exemption from spending the mandatory 14-day quarantine for returned travellers where he landed.

"Because of his consular role, he was given an exemption to then fly on a domestic flight to Maroochydore in Queensland," reporter Lexy Hamilton-Smith said on Sunday.

"He got tested immediately then and went into quarantine and has now tested positive in the last 24 hours."

So how many close contacts etc are now at risk?

Quick update on in laws situation in Manila, Philippines. Previously discussed in the below thread:

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=179&topicid=269748

We have two generation's of in-laws living together in the same house.

One of their employees (Car washer / Handyman / driver) has recently tested positive for covid-19. Prior to this he worked for my in laws while symptomatic for roughly a week. Including car washing (interior & exterior), carrying goods into the house, and 3+ car trips with my farther in law in the vehicle. (Can't really fault the employee. Apparently he asked for time off as he was sick, and my farther in law insisted he continue working...  Ultimately he insisting that he needed to stop working as he was struggling to breath...

The employee is now self isolating with his family in their single room house. He doesn't want to go to isolation facilities provided by the Philippine health system - apparently the health system is at capacity.

My in laws have undertaken tests & got negitive results so while really scared are largely going about their normal lives (going to work etc). Common test their is the INNOVITA rapid test (rather than the swab test we use in NZ) as it is 1/3 of the cost.

We have stressed to them they need to isolated (including from each other) for a couple of weeks, then get another test (Ideally Swap PCR test). They are on board with the additional test, but are unlikely to isolate... Farther in law is quite stubborn, and has taken the -ve test as an OK to go out for food, client meetings etc. He definitely fits in a high risk category too...

All of the above is increasingly stupid. All we can do from NZ is shake our head's.

Given the prevalence of covid-19 in society their, many other of our family friends have stopped using drivers & (non live in) domestic workers to reduce exposure. The general attitude about not caring about the risk of infecting others seems to be common across the country.

The street they live on has had 3 fatalities already (2 early on and 1 recently).

Little point in giving me any advice, as we have largely already done what we can....

Only counter point is that perhaps the virus is going to go through the bulk of the country in the next 6 month's, so perhaps steps to mitigate risk are only delaying the inevitable...

People are getting mixed messages from implementation of precautions. One supermarket will have hand sanitizer prominently displayed at the front door just as it was during L4. Another supermarket has removed all but one sanitizer unit at the entrance & that one is not easily seen as you walk in. Buses in Chch. still have posters with phone numbers for registering trips etc.

Melbourne level 4 restrictions are harsher than we got under level 4, more word on whats deemed non essential tomorrow for business.

Victoria goes into level 3 iirc, metro Melbourne goes to level 4 for 6 weeks.

8PM-5AM curfew - only allowed out to drive to work or seek medical care

One person per household each day doing the daily shopping, must be done within 5km of their home

Groups of 2 max outdoors for working out

Schools closed excl essential workers scools/special needs care

Food delivery pickup/delivery ok if they can manage it safely

Cool.Give it 14 days then 90% sorted. Take flouters into 30 day custody I say. Prepare the public that this may go on another week or so. Tell them if flouters ruin it, EVERYONE prepare for more. Economic cost TOO BAD. To get the economy moving you have to deal with problem 1 first. That will reduce the effect on problem 2 (the economy)
