or supplier price gone up due to demand > supply. easy to blame the retailer but there are many layers of middlemen that are probably the real cause

The line that they should be rolling out is

"Do you have a raincoat?".... Masks are like raincoats"

You don't wear them when you don't have to, but if its pouring down.. its a whole lot easier and drier to get your raincoat from the cupboard than having to go out in the rain to Kathmandu to buy one....

The government should be regulating to prevent gouging, or have a dob in scheme like they did during level 4. $60 for 50 isn't as bad as some pricing I have seen, including some online shops. I see they are also selling 5 x N95 masks for $29.95 which looks high, and can see people on trademe selling them cheaper. But also others selling for a lot more.

Maybe the government needs to list the prices that people should expect to pay for different types of masks. If retailers are forced to sell for no more than a certain price, then the wholesalers would also need to reduce their pricing, if it is the wholesalers pushing up the prices.

Just common sense though. Needs to be far more of it. But IMO we needed to prepare people earlier. eg When we moved down to level 1.

So all queenstown tests negative.

Over 4000 yesterday. ("we do more tests, so we see more cases"... is that right.... lol)

And popups similar to what they ran in Melbourne burbs seem to be being run up north, so people can come forward rather than go somewhere or arrange.

Our Dunedin friend is at it again with statements (that we all have a level head about) and media taking it to runn with top notch headlines again

Very high' chance New Zealand will go back to level two

I know,

..and given that there is now a system to allow regional lockdowns, I think the chance of "New Zealand" going back to Level 2 is actually quite slim... certain areas possibly, but if we ended up taking the whole country going up to that alert level, I think its highly likely it would be on the way to some thing bigger

Variety: Disney’s ‘Mulan’ Gamble: How Much Can It Make By Skipping Theaters?

It’s almost shocking to consider this now, but the very same week in March that the entire entertainment industry effectively shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Walt Disney Company hosted a lavish and star-studded red carpet premiere in Hollywood for what was expected to be one of the year’s biggest theatrical releases: “Mulan.” Hundreds of guests sat in the dark together to watch director Niki Caro’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s 1998 animated feature while snacking on individually packaged tubs of popcorn and taking in the film’s epic scope on a massive, 60-foot screen.

It was the last time U.S. audiences will watch “Mulan” in a movie theater for the foreseeable future.

Just three days after the U.S. premiere — and mere hours after the European premiere in London — Disney postponed “Mulan’s” March 27 release due to the pandemic, hopscotching it first to July 24, then to Aug. 21 before taking it off the release calendar all together. Then on Tuesday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek unveiled the news that “Mulan” will skip U.S. theaters entirely. Instead, the movie will premiere on premium video-on-demand through the studio’s subscription streaming service, Disney Plus. Starting on Sept. 4, audiences can rent “Mulan” for $29.99 on top of the streamer’s monthly fee of $6.99.

...Today, however, the theatrical landscape worldwide is a shadow of its former self. Last weekend, the total domestic box office receipts totaled just over $5 million from about 1,300 theaters

...With audiences in seemingly no rush to race back to theaters any time soon, there’s no chance that Disney could come within a mile of recouping “Mulan’s” $200 million production budget with a traditional theatrical release, and that’s not even considering the cost of a global marketing campaign for the March release that never happened.

“Had [‘Mulan’] opened exclusively in theaters in the U.S. over the next couple months, it would have likely been a disaster,” Bock says. “The majority of families aren’t going anywhere near a theatre for some time, and Disney obviously feels similarly or they wouldn’t have gone full-stream ahead.”

Leaked Covid-19 report warns border, isolation and quarantine staff carry the highest risk of causing an outbreak
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300075002/leaked-covid19-report-warns-border-isolation-and-quarantine-staff-carry-the-highest-risk-of-causing-an-outbreak

The responses that RNZ interview from Ministry of Health were not comforting.

Staff have tests 'available' on site every 2-3 weeks, which does not say how many are tested.
Presumably at other times they have to take time off work or break a shift to go to a test center.
Recent response when pop up test centers were put up shows the difference when you make tests accessible.
Staff daily checks for symptoms ( tickbox checks ? ).
Given most cases can spread when asymptomatic , and many remain asymptomatic, is this really a bit slack.
Responses used the language 'frontline workers', which may not be all border and hotel workers.

We also need to short circuit any reluctance to come forward with support so Airport, Port, Hotel workers don't burn sick leave if they get covid.

These and all their contacts are really the most likely to have contact with covid , even low % our most vulnerable group.

So presently most likely source of spread , barring any escapees.

With Melbourne in mind

Rueters: Philippines' Duterte recommends petrol to clean face masks, says 'not joking'

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday told his people they should use gasoline as a disinfectant for protective face masks - and stressed that his advice was not a joke.

...Mask-wearing has since March been mandatory in the Philippines, which has confirmed nearly 90,000 coronavirus infections and more than 2,000 deaths.

...Medical experts said his mask cleaning tips were not recommended.

“You cannot use gasoline as disinfectant. Inhaling it may cause harm and could lead to more problems like respiratory disease,” Jose Santiago, President of the Philippine Medical Association, told Reuters.

Health experts recommend soap and water for cleaning reusable cloth masks, and 70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol for proper disinfection.

The first time Duterte suggested using petrol on masks, some opponents blasted him what they called dangerous advice.

“DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME”, Senator Risa Hontiveros said on Twitter.

“‘FACT CHECK: Gasoline and diesel should not be used in disinfecting.”

I was listening to Sir David Skegg about this today. He said the odds of NZ going back to level 2 coudl be high. Mainly due to human error around the border, and could especially be the case when rules are relaxed at the borders. eg Students being allowed to be quarantined in halls of residence and managed privately, the odds of some errors in processes is high. Also it could go on for a good 4 years. He is also skeptical about a vaccine.

Probably a good listen for  many. https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/sir-david-skegg-kiwis-urged-to-buy-supply-of-face-masks/id1229518712?i=1000487352209

IMO we have to keep improving the border, and make it more and more watertight. The entire economy and NZers future is almost entirely based on what happens at the border to keep the virus out. The cost of a leak, like has occurred in Victoria, is going to cost a huge amount of money, and huge knock on effects, including a lot of unnecessary death. Let alone how it inconveniences and restricts the lives of everyone, when a lockdown occurs.
