Dingbatt:

Can’t let facts stand in the way of opinion though.
If you take New York and New Jersey and their abysmal response out of the equation, they drop even further down.

If you take all the dead people out of the equation, then nobody died at all.

Cherry-pick data to reach incorrect conclusions in order to try to score political points.  Shame.

who has seen trumps latest outburst ? https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/its-over-new-zealand-trump-attacks-nzs-covid-19-response-third-time

...To contrast the two countries, almost 175,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the USA, while New Zealand's death toll is 22....

If NZ had the same population as the USA, by comparison for every NZ death, the USA would have 118.

Maybe he should do the job he was elected for and lead America to reduce their death toll, not disparage other countries. Every country in the world is doing a better job. Maybe that should be casting his eyes in the mirror, or meeting with Dr Fauci.

Is this a health thread or one for political hacks? There is clearly cross over but this is getting stupidly political.

I really hope we have done better than this:

Testimony at the Victoria Hotel Quarantine Enquiry https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-21/returned-travellers-describe-dehumanising-hotel-quarantine/12581884

"An authorised officer put in charge of hotel quarantine operations at Melbourne hotels says ... he was given a 10-minute handover before the start of his first shift as an authorised officer and a 'draft document' outlining what his role entailed.
He also completed an hour of 'equity and diversity' training, but with no experience or training on how to properly use PPE, Mr Ashford said he 'did the best I thought I could do'.
...
Mr Ashford said he was rostered to work at the Crown Promenade, Crown Metropol, Mercure Welcome, Grand Chancellor, Novotel on Collins, The Pullman and the Pan Pacific Hotel."

He didn't remark on the systemic danger of having someone like him work across so many different Covid workplaces, maybe he still isn't aware of that.

What he did remark on was that "'Every hotel delivered the program differently', he said 'There did not seem to be a consistent way that things were done or consistency in what needed to be done'."

Mr Ashford quit after four weeks "'I did not feel that this was a safe environment to work in and I was concerned for my health and the health of my family,' he said. 'I didn't want to be the guy who shut my daughter's school down.' "

😠

The risky way to speed up a coronavirus vaccine

Vox

A Covid-19 vaccine could take a long time. Some scientists are proposing a controversial plan that could get us one faster.

I had to go into Auckland CBD yesterday to collect something I had ordered earlier from PB Tech. Footpaths on the walk into town were quiet, but I put my mask on as I neared Queen Street.

Quite a lot of non masked people there, but streets weren't too busy so it was possible to avoid getting too close to most of them. I hope they aren't all travelling on public transport without a mask.

Having said that, most of the buses that I saw looked almost empty, so probably easier to distance yourself on a bus right now than in a shop. This will change when we go back to level 2.

Down in level 2 here in Wellington about 5% of ppl are wearing masks, and thats on the train where more people make an effort.

Pretty piss poor effort if you ask me.

I also get odd looks.

The inverse of this is also true. Some people are willing to make every excuse for failings as it suits their politics.

People sure do.

The way I see it, in my opinion, New Zealand is winning. Better than scaremongering.

Hacks are hacks on either side of the spectrum. Both have fairly meaningless views based on opinion rather than facts.

I hope it goes without saying, but no one should experiment at home with the Oleander plant. Of course many drugs come from dangerous plants, but leave it to the professionals. From Wikipedia: "Ingestion of larger amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, excess salivation, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea and irregular heart rhythm."

Forbes: U.S. Army halted tests on Oleandrin, a drug touted to Trump as Covid-19 cure by MyPillow CEO Lindell

The U.S. Army discontinued its testing of a plant extract being pushed to President Trump by MyPillow.com CEO Mike Lindell as a potential treatment for coronavirus, an effort that has drawn scrutiny due to Lindell’s direct financial interest in the drug.

The drug, an extract from the highly toxic Oleander plant, was subject to “multiple iterations” of a neutralization test by the U.S. Army Institute of Infectious Diseases to determine if it could halt Covid-19 infection, Army spokesperson Lori Salvatore told Forbes.

However, Salvatore says, the tests proved “inconclusive” and USAIID discontinued its testing of Oleandrin to focus on “evaluating other therapeutics and compounds to treat and prevent” coronavirus.

The news comes after Lindell, a Trump backer who sits on the board of the company developing Oleandrin, Phoenix Biotechnology, told Axios that he and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson promoted the extract to Trump as a coronavirus treatment and that the president said during a meeting in July “the FDA should be approving it."

“We'll look at it,” Trump said of the drug on Monday; Lindell maintained to CNN that day that Trump is “enthusiastic” about the treatment.

Lindell was taken to task by CNN host Anderson Cooper on Sunday, who called him a “snake-oil salesman” for pushing coronavirus treatments without a medical background.

In that interview, Lindell touted the drug as safe, claiming that a test of “1,000 people” was conducted on it, though Anderson noted “there are no public peer-reviewed studies about this,” and demanded Lindell produce evidence of the test he referenced, to which Lindell replied, “I don’t have the test.”

COVID-19 means a lot of people overseas are working from home. From the same company that brought us horse blinders for office workers, Panasonic has released the home cubicle

The Verge: Panasonic’s new home cubicle is a disheartening glimpse at our work-from-home future

The photos in that second link are pritty worrying.

If people are going to be spending enough time working at home to justify a cubical in their living room, a reasonable ergonomic setup is pritty much essential. (Especially in covid-19 times where you could end up working from that space for weeks on end at the drop of a hat)

I appreciate that the cubical is ultra compact to minimize intrusion into living space, but that is not really an excuse for lousy ergonomics.

Really need a monitor mounted on that rear wall, of a shelf of some kind to elevate the laptop (paired with an external keyboard and mouse)

I get they are just marketing photos, but still, how hard is it to show a more realistic working space, at minimum a mouse for the laptop, ideally a power cord as well.

A good read on the genomic sequencing and how it is helping with the latest outbreak by David Welch (a senior Computer Science lecturer at  the University of Auckland).

Genome sequencing tells us the Auckland outbreak is a single cluster — except for one case

Hunger Strike in Isolation "because I want to isolate at home"

As if the task of the staff looking after returnees is not hard and dangerous enough, seems to me complaining because they did not monitor his food intake seems a bit much.
