Nope "volka".  It's what happens when you drink it.  I'm washing my hands of this conversation.

A friend bought recently a 50 pc packet of BZK antiseptic wipes distributed by DTS Medical. The packet includes this information:

Active ingredients Benzalkonium Chloride 0.133%

Do not use with electrocautery procedures

Stop use if irritation and redness develop

Can anyone advise please whether this product is recommended because on the other thread there were some warnings against the use of BZK. However, perhaps the rather low concentration of BZK in this product may make it OK for hand cleaning?

Vodka and other consumable alcohols are only good(?) for helping you temporarily forget the effects and existence of Coronavirus/Covid-19. Hand sanitiser needs a minimum of 60% alcohol content, apparently.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Soap is indicated. Wash your hands for twenty seconds or more.

Do not use vodka.

I saw a headline in Stuff and thought they'd plagiarised one of my posts.

But no, a more eloquent and complete explanation - with diagrams:

Make your own hand sanitiser:, isopropyl alcohol or 95% ethanol (from paint section at hardware store) plus Glycerin (some chemists).

See WHO guide: https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf

Yup.  It's often thickened/gelled with methylcellulose, which you'd disperse by mixing in the ethanol (or isopropanol) first, then I'd add the water, then the other ingredients (peroxide and glycerine). If you do it the other way, you'd likely end up with a lumpy mess.

I'm pretty sure I've seen food grade methylcellulose for sale in health food shops.  Maybe start with 0.01% w/w - shouldn't need much.  You'd need to experiment. Maybe 0.01% would be too much, maybe not - so you'd need to find out for yourself - as grades vary etc.

WHO make a comment that they have no data on whether it has an impact on activity.  However, I very much doubt it would, and when thickened it's going to pump properly out of dispensers, and is probably safer from a fire risk point of view - if there's spillage etc.

None of the commercial stuff I've seen here has peroxide in it as a preservative (maybe some has - but I haven't seen it), and I've had a 500ml bottle on our boat for years which is still crystal clear, but throw some in if you want - that's what they suggest.

You don't have to "follow" (have an account - so you can interact) twitter to view it.  On a computer web browser it's no problem, and a nagging nuisance on mobile (android) where apart from messages pleading at you to load the app, it won't display messages with a "not authorised to view message" (or whatever).  Refresh the page (ie on chrome for Android) and the message should display fine.  Sorry - a bit off-topic.  I despise twitter, but I also have a bit of an aversion to Stuff as well - so never clicked the link you posted.

True.  I probably just have an aversion to clicking links or get distracted or got lazy.  I got very frustrated trying to explain to people about the benefits of soap and water vs "antimicrobial" disinfectants etc in these Covid-19 related threads.  I wish you'd put  a sticky or header at the top of the forum, with links to credible sources, contacts etc.  It's a bigger issue than Measles vacc - which gets a place there - and subject to more incorrect myth and CT, and the main Covid thread is 115 pages already.

I'm totally set if I need alcohol-based disinfection - the still in the laundry puts out 3-4 liters of 90%+ ethanol, which should be enough to see us through :)
It's also good for making limoncello and vodka, which will help if things truly turn to custard.
