Went shopping with a longist list for my sister-inlaw & husband both in their 80's with health conditions. Went to Pak-n-Save Tauranga. All very orderly and everyone was polite.

The only odd thing was one male, 30's, wearing blue plastic gloves and a S10 Respirator. He was only missing the hazmat suit.

not sure whats going on in Rotorua at the local Pak n Save but this morning i drove past 10 minutes after it opening and the  queue was 150 metres long, yet i went at the same time last Friday and i went straight in. I have given up going there and just go to New World at 9.00 pm and have the place to myself , very tranquil experience.

I went to Wairau Rd Pak n Save on the North Shore and it was all very orderly, right up to the end...when I was leaving there was a woman right up my clacker.

She was biggish and wearing a mask, with a couple of items in her hands and when I turned around and said "Please stay back 2m, I'd like to keep the social distancing thing intact", she just looked at me...maybe she didn't speak English?

Anyway, we got to the carpark where everyone was still keeping their distance from one another and she pushed past me (literally elbowed me in the upper arm) and then did the same to a few others on her way to the van she was a passenger in. Driver chatted to her then she nodded in my direction and her driver said something unintelligible towards me and they drove off at speed.

I wonder if she'd nicked some stuff and was terrified of getting caught?

Colleague had that this mormning too, elsewhere. I think early is the new cool time to go, to avoid crowds. Result = crowds. With WFH or off work, plenty pf people can shop any time, so lets go early....

It would be great if they had webcams outside supermarkets and maybe in the checkout area.  Then you could time your shop when it is quiet and minimise risk.

I had a weird experience last Saturday at Pak n Save, I was about 30 minutes behind a massive wave of people which meant by the time I got to check-out, there was hardly anyone there.  But the staff said it had been manic all morning.  I think the panickers go early

Went for my first big grocery shop this morning since the level 4 lockdown, at  about 8am  Horny Pak n Sav

Queue was long but it took me about 10 minutes to be allowed in. There was a staff member at the entrance handing out

a leaflet and also the trolleys were sprayed with sanitizer before being passed to customers.

I think all essential workers were allowed in without queuing as I was asked if I was one.

People were respectful to keep their distance but on the odd occasion we did have to pass each other down the aisles.

No flour, baking powder or yeast.  The nation is really into baking at the moment I guess. Maybe the most googled search is for no knead bread!?

There was a  large piece of perspex shield infront of check-out  operator and a note advising shoppers to stay behind and not to start packing

stuff from the trolley. ie: don't venture past the eftpos machine. Got passed a wet tissue soaked in sanitizer to wipe your hands and trolley handles .

I must say it was a more pleasant experience than before the lockdown when there was a mad rush.

On the way out went to the chemist  to get something else.  Saw a bottle of hand sanitizer at checkout.  -bought  a 300ml bottle for $27.  yikes!

cheers.

I drove past Pak n Save on moorehouse in CHCH yesterday and queue was massive out to the road and down the street. About 250meters up the road was the New World parked up and went straight in fully stocked and fruit and veg seemed good price to me.

I'm told it was due to benefit\pension pay day on Tuesday? I also had the same thing, drove there, queue was insane and barely moving so went home. Went back in the evening and all good - queue was probably half the length to get in and moving quite quickly. Was my first shop since lockdown and quite a weird experience. Took quite a long time to actually complete the shop as I was *trying* to observe the physical distancing at all time... quite tricky with various people dawdling, some clearly shopping together despite "bouncer" at the entrance refusing entry to couples, etc.

I don't think benefits have been paid on a single day for many years - pretty sure it wasn't the case when I worked for MSD 12-15 years ago; benefits are paid weekly on a Tue, Wed or Thur.

NZ Super (and VP), on the other hand, is indeed paid on a Tuesday - and that's every fortnight.

@jonathan18,  Ahhh OK. Yeah in any case we've agreed in our household to try and limit shops to Monday or Fridays from now. In particular to try and avoid older and more vulnerable shoppers. I noticed that there were tradies next to the paknsave building large metal and plywood barriers - I suspect maybe for traffic control and\or to improve the outdoor queuing experience?

Most supermarkets now have preferential queuing for police/medical staff.

This is nice, but we would feel embarrassed to queue jump.

Countdown have just started a better system -- where they open an hour early for police/medical only.

My wife did a partial shop last night (on her own), will probably complete it tonight - stock willing. The wait at New World Birkenhead was about 10 minutes, Countdown Birkenhead didn't have a wait.

Wife is paranoid, so want to use online but that seemless worse than hopeless right now. Mate setup for that last night, no booking slots. Checked this morning as a new day of slots, all full. Countdown recommended to go instore. Do we need to go online shopping at 11-59pm?
