I tried getting an online delivery from Countdown at 8am this morning, but none available at all, not even 7 days ahead. The same happened for New World, completely full for the next 7 days.

Yep.  My FIL is isolated by himself, he's 84 with multiple risk factors, despite being confirmed high priority for online shopping - we still haven't been able to arrange anything.

I'll have to do some shopping for him tomorrow or Tuesday - that's OK but I'd have preferred not to.

He's OK.  We very carefully thought out how to minimise his exposure risk - there was no ideal solution.

And here's another thing, we are now being told that when our groceries arrive we should put our gloves and masks on and put the goods into quarantine for at least 48 hours. So, we now have at least a 7-day delay in delivery and a 2-day quarantine delay, so you have to plan 9 days ahead

My wife shopped yesterday and when she got home I washed the fruit and veges in warm soapy water, rinsed well and let dry on a tea towel. We also wiped down all the packaging with antibacterial wipes. It seems absurd but we had nothing else to do, lol.

I braved a trip to New World Halswell about 6:30pm last night.

Queued for 15-20 min. I found the whole process quite surreal. The sections I noticed that weren't stocked well were confectionery, pet food, and soaps etc.

I did do a larger shop that usual ($330), but I had set up Apple Pay because I didn't want to touch the EFTPOS terminal so was disappointed when it asked me to enter my PIN into their terminal.

JaseNZ:

Went down the delivery route yesterday from countdown, A couple of seconds after midnight you could see the slots for next Saturday and they all started turning full so managed to get a 5.30pm delivery, Within a few seconds everything was full so people are hammering the online delivery which is good as people are staying inside.

I tried getting an online delivery from Countdown at 8am this morning, but none available at all, not even 7 days ahead. The same happened for New World, completely full for the next 7 days.

It seems that the online delivery system is so overloaded now that you could say it's virtually collapsed. I'll try at midnight tonight, but it's ridiculous that people should have to do that to get a slot. It reminds me of getting online tickets to a rock concert or an All Blacks game!

Perhaps the Army needs to step in and help the supermarkets with their online deliveries? After all, we are being told to stay home if at all possible and keep our cars off the roads, so we now need Government help to do this!

And here's another thing, we are now being told that when our groceries arrive we should put our gloves and masks on and put the goods into quarantine for at least 48 hours as the virus can last 24 hours on paper and packaging and longer on tins etc. So, we now have at least a 7-day delay in delivery and a 2-day quarantine delay, so you have to plan 9 days ahead before you can get new groceries.

Sigh.

Its a nationwide quarantine, a LOT of people are trying to do online delivery - too many people for them to handle. All the flour is out - want to call in the army to help make that too?

SOME people are suggesting to isolate your groceries for a period. I have barely seen this mentioned, it is not official advice, and nobody can force you to.

Honestly..

Thanks, that's a good example, you'd think that an 84-year old who has been confirmed as high priority could be allocated a home delivery slot on a timely basis. Bring in the Army, that's the only answer!

Just one other thing, you can phone Countdown customer service and ask them to add goods to a previous "completed" but undelivered order. A friend tried this and after a 2-hour wait was told that you can only add $50 worth of groceries to an undelivered order.

Well, I suppose that's better than nothing, but why on earth would they have a $50 limit for this? And why can't you do this yourself online without having to wait 2 hours to get through to someone at customer "service"?

MadEngineer:

Hospital staff should be changing at work and NOT taking their hospital uniform into a supermarket.

This is certainly the case for the MCDHB.

Also the case for Paramedics.  Get changed at the station.

But the post does say "or with ID", which they should be carrying as proof of being allowed to travel anyway.

Being told by who?

I'm not saying this is not recommended, but I haven't seen any official advice about this.

But where does it end. If you do the shopping yourself do you have to disinfect the inside of your car afterwards? Wash the outside?

I don't have the answers, but how far is too far?

Wife found this, makes sense, so I was forced, I mean cooperated to do this the other day. We sprayed with disinfectant, art them dry then packed away. Notable, is that freezing will keep the virus alive for 2 years. The opposite from what the average Joe would think.

Consider what this article says:

The primary concern for shoppers is other people, not food. Though shoppers might worry about infecting themselves by handling the same apple or Cheerios box as someone else, health experts say transmission through food or its wrapping is largely avoidable. Research suggests that the virus can exist on cardboard food packaging for a day, and on plastic for several days, but it becomes less infectious over these periods. “My recommendation is just to wash your hands after you handle external packaging,” Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Columbia University, says. “High-touch” objects such as shopping-cart handles are a bigger concern, but many stores have provided sanitizing wipes for those.

So research suggests that the virus can exist on cardboard food packaging for a day, and on plastic for several days. We are "being told" this by articles like the above, but not by the authorities as you correctly say. I also agree with your comment "how far is too far", so you just have to take a few risks with anything in life. Getting food during the lockdown is possibly the biggest risk area that we face, so some care is obviously needed.

Couriers are working as essential services, why are they not being used to make local supermarket online deliveries?
There’s no way countdown or new world can ramp up capacity if they have the same number of little trucks and drivers.

I actually think supermarkets aren’t helping themselves in this situation, they need to look at other options. When people see all the delivery slots booked out weeks in advance and see empty shelves in stores, it only leads to more panic buying.

I doubt anybody here works in supermarket delivery logistics and can answer that. I would hazard a non-expert opinion that there are many, many reasons why they can't, don't want to, and shouldn't use couriers.

Supporting the above, have a listen to Dr Chris Smith (Kim Hill has him on on Saturday mornings on National radio).  This issue is covered off starting about 13'13' in the following podcast:

The supermarket delivery trucks that I've seen on the road appear to be temperature controlled trucks, which would be required for meat, dairy and frozen goods.

Ive taken frozen product from South Auckland to wellsford using the cooler bags available at Supermarkets, how far are they making deliveries?

Couriers already deliver fresh/frozen product for many of the other food delivery options, my food bag, hello fresh etc, so it would appear they can do it, but perhaps supermarkets haven't pursued the possibility for other reasons.
