Most people re-use one password for everything, fact of life. Its not going to be an issue for the majority of people as they aren't going to forget their only password. Plus every single service we use has a username/email/password combo. People figure out ways to work with that. This is just another one to add to whatever system they use (whether recycling passwords, writing them in a book, using a password manager or memorising them).

The app also failed because no one used it since the QR codes were nowhere to be found, and places that did have them were a mix of the GOVT app and 3rd party ones that weren't compatible. Now that they're requiring all businesses to display the official GOVT ones, people would be able to use the app at more places and hence more likely for the app to succeed. I don't think the app has been 100% perfect by any stretch, and I'd love to see some things done differently, but they're making progress which deserves credit and trying to create problems where there isn't one just isn't helping anybody here.

If you have 493 passwords in your password manager then this is just another one. I can't see why this would even be a problem.

For a geek. It doesn't work for normal people. The first time they get prompted for a password they can't remember, they stop using the app. For the 0.2% of people who used it in the first place.

Or they sign up again breaking the ability to connect their past checkins to their new ones.

Hemi88: Is the resign in an Android thing I haven’t had to use password again on iPhone used since app released

Could be. Or IOS is taking care of it with the built in manager.

First thing that alerted people was it dying exactly 30 days after appearing on the store - which was a day or 2 before 'official' release. Stopped reading QRs etc. So had to be patched up.

And ever since it seems to be re-triggered on update or period

This poor dude tried to point that out and got the same answer lol

I've used this app successfully, but every so often it tells me to log in again with my email and password. Why? Obviously I'm not going to do that in a queue with people waiting for me! The Ministry response says this is for "privacy and security reasons". I have to log in to my phone anyway so the...

Ministry of Health NZJuly 29, 2020 Kia ora Marty, thank you for your feedback. The app requires you to log-in every 30 days due to privacy and security reasons. Ngā mihi.

I note now they have also added opt-in 2FA using google code or similar.   So despite not being a lot of data to hurt someone, they're REALLLLY ticking the boxes to make sure noone calls them out on being too insecure.

Whoever made this decision for an app that's critically dependent on mass adoption and use in order to be effective should be killed and then eaten to prevent them from passing on the genes.

Or it could still allow the scan but prevent it from going into the store or accessing anything until a login is completed, so that people arent stuffing around at a doorway when theyre logged out for no good reason other than box ticking.

I was out today with my iPhone and while waiting to be collected decided to download the app and record the QR code since Mr E was late.

First annoyance was it needing a 10 digit password with caps and numbers etc. Had a few goes at that trying to fit something that I could remember and wondered why so much security for something that was going to record my visit to Briscoes.

The most irritating part was in the second step it informed me that it sent a 6 digit verification code to my email that needed inputting before I could continue. I don’t have my email synced from my other devices to the phone because I don’t want or need to be bothered with emails when out, therefore since I wasn’t at home to access my email, I couldn’t get the verification code to complete the registration.

I am sure there are many 'ordinary 'people that don’t have their email accounts on their phones. Instead why can’t MOH send a verification code via SMS to the phone that you are downloading the app on to and not to an email address. Is this unreasonable?

Finished the registration when I got home to my device with email and have yet to try it out.

Oblivian:  Make it easier, and people will equally cry fowl over lack security measures when it comes to personal information.

No they won't. And they might even be inclined to use it.

Is the app in the huawai app store or available as an apk for people sucked into getting a newer phone from them?

I believe they're more than open to suggestions going by some of the changes made as things progress. Worth a shot suggesting.

I beg to differ.

Read the 1* reviews where people have not even installed and and without RTFM accused them of being controlling and not wanting to be subjected to giving any personal information.

You mean "read complaints from a small group of nutcases who will whine about anything the government does"? We already know what the majority (99.8%) opinion is, which is that it's too painful to use. I don't care if 0.01% of the population refuse to use it because it isn't tinfoil-hatty enough for them, I want the remaining 99.9% of the population to use it so we have contact tracing that works. At the moment it's catering for entirely the wrong demographic.

It's a lot more broad actuality and less than "No they won't." blanket.

There's no reason to keep batting it. The complaints/contact email has been posted on many conferences.

Take it to them?  This threads not going to fix it or defer those who don't find it such a holdback.

Good idea. We could crowdsource a redesign, the main issues I see are:

1. Use a less dense QR code to make it easier to scan.

2. Make it immediately come up with the scan-QR-code op when it starts.

3. Get rid of the *&^#*& lockout.

4. Allow automatic location-based logging if you enable it.

Option 4 would be the biggest deal in terms of making it useful. Sure, a small portion of tinfoil-hatters will refuse to use it, but if we can get at least 50% adoption we've achieved a 24900% increase in performance.
