Yes we both scan every time have done it from the start, don't see any reason to stop yet.

Is it me or has it only worked when your online, scanned yesterday with out turning on my data and it worked or is it since bluetooth has been enabled?

It was always turn on data then check and turn data off before.

On Auckland Transport, if one tags on with a registered "Hop" card, what is the benefit of scanning QR codes? We can be traced using the Hop card info.

If there is a benefit, the case for it should be made, if only briefly, on the posters exhorting us to scan. On the buses I catch mask wearing has improved to be the norm, better last week than when it was first made compulsory. However, I don't often see anyone scanning the QR codes.

because its many times faster in alerting you you have been exposed rather than waiting for contract tracers to contact you.

means you can get tested and isolate yourself while you wait on the results.

if you did have covid, potentially would be 2-3 less people would have gotten it off you.

"The device location setting needs to be on for Bluetooth to detect nearby devices that have Exposure Notifications on".

Looks like we're following the standard NZ pattern of only adopting something once it's seen to have failed overseas, sigh. And now that we've got the Bluetooth Lottery as a "solution", people will be even less motivated to scan the QR codes.

Speaking of data and checking, has anyone else experienced endlessly long runtimes of the app trying to check what's going on? Longest I've seen is nearly an hour of a lock-screen spinner telling me the app is checking for contacts.

Sorry, posted too early, so will expand.

Please provide evidence of the Apple/Google Exposure Notification Framework being a failure as you claim.

It did seem a bit... uninformative... there's been a lot written about how Bluetooth isn't effective for this, it's a typical white-male-effect "solution", here's a magic tech and we'll declare it to be the solution whether it's actually one or not. tl;dr is that Bluetooth is OK (not good but OK) as a short-range low-power comms mechanism but not at all suited to use for contact tracing. If you want a specific link to one article I'll go with the MIT Technology Review since that's pretty neutral and technically astute, but otherwise try https://www.google.com/search?q=bluetooth+tracing+failure.

That, and countries like the UK used it as the SOLE mechanism.

No contract tracing team stood up, or QRs

Our use, is supplemental to working QR (when people bother to) and tracing teams

To assist narrowing down close contacts directly after the leg work to match movements

Not just relying on that. Which yes,.would be dumb like others used.

And that's the point. It is not the only method used.

In theory. In practice we'll have to wait and see what happens to QR code use when the Bluetooth figleaf is available. Risk homeostasis would indicate that people will stop using QR codes if a simpler (read, lazier) alternative is provided. So instead of at least some use of QR codes we could end up with relying entirely on Bluetooth, which as other countries have found out works really poorly.

It took a long time for the app design to follow some sensible privacy practices, which coincidentally drive ease of use and adoption. I expect thats the real reason for late adoption.

And I stand by my opinion that people are lazy and do stupid things. If we have another outbreak, the previous 14 days of scanning won't exist.

So yes, lazy and stupid.

I have no doubt that most people don't scan because they can't be bothered, but you have to be a bit careful about being judgemental based on your observations.

My local supermarket has QR code posters at the checkouts, so some of the people who don't scan as they enter may be scanning at the checkout. On the trains most people probably scan as they board, but I personally prefer to scan as I disembark.

As long as the scanning gets done, that's what matters.

While I can see where you're coming from, I think the timing of the scan does matter. I was surprised a few weeks back when I saw the MOH had announced that a supermarket I went to had a positive case related to it on the day I visited. As I did scan into that supermarket I wondered why MOH had not followed up with me. I suspect they only followed up with people who were there during a very specific timeframe.

Lets say they only contact people within a short window of time, and your late scanning ends up outside that window results in MOH making the decision to not follow up with you thinking you weren't there (when in fact you were and you hadn't scanned at your earliest opportunity)...
