The app is supposed to have push notifications, check if it's turned on?

Does anyone know if the tracer app will work on a mobile running Android Go?

We're wanting to get our Dad the cheapest mobile possible where its only purpose will be to have this app installed. Currently this is potentially the Vodafone Smart E11 for ~$65/$69 running Android 10 Go. He doesn't want and won't use a phone but is overridden by not wanting to write his contact info on community clipboards and there will be times he won't have someone in his bubble with him to scan in on his behalf.

I've just been talking to a human via Vodafone's chatbot who said they can't guarantee the app will work because it's not a full version of Android.

Does anyone have any wisdom on if the app will work properly on Android Go?

I run it on Sailfish OS which is a Linux OS that has the option of enabling Android App support. It's not an Android OS, and I don't have Google Play service functionality. The tracer app works.

I'd say you'll be OK with Android Go.

In the last week my phone has been having the screen turn on in the middle of the night with a notification saying BT has been turned off.

The screen stays on all night and I lose 20% of battery. If it's by my bed the lit screen wakes up my wife.

It's a Oneplus8T, set to silent so BT and wifi are all on, and only mine does this in our house. It doesn't do it at any other time of the day, no matter how much it little I use the phone

Anyone know why it's doing this and how to stop it?

Battery management software?

Some devices switch off functions that haven't been used for a while to save battery. Have a dig in your settings to see if there's a setting for this for Bluetooth or for an app that might use Bluetooth.

Also you may have an other app that uses Bluetooth which is switching Bluetooth off. I had that problem using Bluetooth earphones on my tablet fro a while. They kept dropping off. I found another app that was causing the problem.

Thanks, hadn’t seen this. Susan is somewhat famous and very smart so of course it is a reasonable summary of the tech side (is missing some things like QR codes). It is missing most of the public health considerations that underpin the “why” which I think most people talking about this from a tech perspective don't consider/understand.

I think @andrewchen does a good job of balancing both sets of considerations in the public media.

Interesting release from Privacy Commission today:

Privacy Commissioner John Edwards is concerned that people are gaining access to personal information from paper-based contact tracing registers and using it in ways that breach peoples’ privacy.

The Government’s introduction of mandatory record keeping requires businesses to display a QR Code and have an alternative record keeping system, enabling them to collect contact tracing records in a privacy-protective way.

Ensuring businesses’ record keeping systems protect peoples’ privacy is a legal requirement under Privacy Act 2020.

Mr Edwards says although most organisations and businesses know they need to provide a manual alternative to the QR Code, many are using paper registers that leave peoples’ contact details visible to members of the public.

“Using an open sheet or register left in a public-facing position where personal information is visible to others is a leading cause of COVID-19-related privacy breaches. It’s important that businesses provide other methods of collecting and storing contact tracing records, but in ways which also protect the privacy of those whose details are being collected.”

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has published guidance on mandatory record keeping for contact tracing.

Privacy-protective ways of collecting and storing information for contact tracing

Set up a ballot box with individual paper slips or cards for people to fill in the name, date, phone number and time.
Have an employee manually record visitor details – this ensures that staff maintain control over the records and do not leave contact information visible to others.
Consider an electronic system, like a tablet sign-in app, work timesheet or an existing booking system.
Use a special purpose work cell phone to receive texts from customers or visitors. Simply post the cell phone number around the entrance to your service or organisation and let customers text you their name. The phone will automatically record the phone number, date and time.

I thought the new ballots was the norm. Both local supermarkets running them. But must be limited to requesting or DIY.

One further afield is still a clipboard

most had security ensuring you did them or zapped.
Though many people are simply making the motion when it is clear it wasnt enough time to scan given the budget phone or even running the tracer app with the obvious yellow surround

In answer to my own question for anyone who stumbles across this later, yes the Covid Tracer app does indeed run fine on Android Go. Ended up buying a Vodafone Smart E9 which runs Android 8 Go for my Dad to be able to scan in rather than write his contact details all over town.

Apologies if this has been asked further back. Given we're in the season of new iOS devices coming out is it possible yet to backup the dairy to iCloud (or somewhere else) as yet or coming soon?

Does this not already happen as part of the normal iCloud backup process?

I just bought a new iPhone 13 and did the migration by restoring an iCloud backup to the new phone. This seems to have carried my Covid Tracer diary across.

Pretty much everything is backed up on iOS and can be restored, as long as you use an encrypted backup. Either iCloud or a local encrypted backup. Non-encrypted does not copy sensitive info.

The Dashboard screen isn't working for me. I can switch to the 'record visit' mode, but the Dashboard is blank and the 'today' and 'more info' buttons are unresponsive.

The problem seems to have started when I upgraded from an iPhone XS to an iPhone 13 Pro, so maybe the problem is specific to that model of phone?

Previous history from the devs mentioning here has shown the size, and IOS privacy updates break stuff. So most likely

One of those sorts of devices that because it is worldwide release, they can't get one to test before I guess.
