Geektastic:
As a rule, we try to avoid Masterton after sundown for similar reasons. My wife thought I was joking when I suggested costing up a 4 metre razor wire boundary fence.

Having had an attempt made there to hijack my car in broad daylight at knifepoint a few years ago, probably best to avoid it altogether 😀

@Geektastic I’m not sure that razor wire fence is such a good idea. (Snip, snip). It makes it appear as if you have something valuable to protect and could have the opposite effect of encouraging interest. I think locked gates and cameras with a blinking light too high to smash are a good deterrent.

@Dairyxox be happy that your dad is still around and appears normal. Mr E's best friend fell the other day and brain bleed was so bad they could do nothing. Funeral Saturday. It’s a reminder of how fragile life can be from one moment to the next. OTOH was just reading about a woman in Brazil being the oldest in the world at age 121. All her children had died so she lived with her grandchild and was still mobile up to eight years ago.

The spate of violent crime is now getting to everyone and it feels like there’s no effort to address it. Too many namby pamby excuses and not enough serious deterrents.

Dairyxox:

The lack of policing and weak penalty for crimes has me worried. About the threat of home invasion - the best advice I've read was to run away, but my children might not be so fortunate in that scenario. So now I'm mentally preparing for the fact that a home invasion may end up in a fight to the death. Logic being that even if I'm breaking the law (by possibly using disproportionate force), its better to spend 6 years in jail, than have me or a family member dead.

The law in NZ around self defence has been of great concern to me for many years and it's only getting worse. When you have regular prosecutions by the police against people defending themselves against home invasions, burglaries etc, something is fundamentally broken with the system IMO.

Weighing up applying for a job I can probably get but even further to commute to vs. the one that I have that I might advance at, but with it already being 18 months since my last pay review, I can't really afford to stay and find out.

I totally agree, but apropos is the current case before the courts where the intruder had his head bashed in and finger chopped off by the occupant/owner(?). Compare that to a gunshot to the chest in self defence, which is more tenable? I'm actually not sure any more.

Have you asked the question with your current employer? If that fails, you could apply for the new job anyway and use the job offer as leverage to ask for a pay rise. There's no harm in trying, everyone is suffering increased cost of living and it's only reasonable to ask for a pay review if it's warranted.

Having said that, I've been actively trying to reduce my weekly commute time over the past decade as that has a massive inverse effect on wellbeing, and if there was any way to avoid a longer commute, do it.

In case it helps anyone to know I'm going to say this. The recent ram raid trend is a social media driven thing. Like other social media trends it will fade. Statistics show youth crime like most crime is trending down. The other mention, home invasions are relatively rare. The vast majority are between parties known to each other for semi-criminal reasons.

Definitely apply. You can always turn it down. After telling your employer what the offer is of course hint hint ; ).

It's been close to two months now since I lost my job and very little interest from any of the applications. As someone who has worked for most of his adult life, I find it weirdly disconcerting. The lack of social interaction I would usually get at work has also disappeared (mostly my fault being the introvert that I am, but covid certainly hasn't helped). It's all getting a bit much to be fair and I can't see an easy way out of it. I may have to swallow my pride and get a minimum wage job somewhere and hope for the best in the mean time.

That sucks. Sometimes it's just luck. Some industries get movement at times of year. It could be a good time for some training or something like that. Experienced people with a minimum of training in a new area as well as existing experience can be very attractive.

One must hope, I suppose, that murder does not become a social media driven thing.

That's no fun. In case anyone can help, what sort of work do you do? You never know who might know a guy who knows a guy etc.

@maoriboy Hey - I remember seeing you lost your job a month or so back. Sorry to hear it's still an ongoing thing. I'm recently highly motivated to look at the job market now too, and what I've found that helps is doing a bit of in person networking. It was surprising the response from even what I'd class as 'beta contacts'. Even online listings - it's helpful if you go and meet people in person - a bit hard in pandemic times (a lot of offices were closed to visitors) - but don't even ask them first, just rock up. I'm also an introvert so it took a lot of self motivation to get over the first step. However once people know your face & name, then your application is more likely to stand out in their mind. If you're currently unemployed then you should have the time to go and try it. Its a bit old school now, so it might give you an edge in this day & age. Good luck whatever you do.

@gzt Thank you - honestly that helps put it in perspective a bit.

@Eva888 Thank you, and I'm terribly sorry for your Mister's loss. Even though we have our struggles I still count my blessings every day. Plenty of good things happen, but its these setbacks that remind us to make the most of what we have right now, and not waste our time on the useless stuff.

Care to give some examples as I can't recall any off the top of my head.

The one where the guy chopped off the intruders finger was obviously going beyond self defence.
