tdgeek: Pills etc will work, but if you can add melatonin sourced foods that may provide a more consistent outcome

Bickford's cherry juice off the shelf at paknsave about $8 for a litre.Throw back 30mls per night out of the fridge just before bed. Starts working for consistent sleeps after about three or four days. I had all kinds of weird dreams after a while maybe that's just me. I buy it occasionally. It was better than not sleeping.

Over a period of time I tried a few relatively expensive cherry juices and actually that's the one that worked sitting on the shelf at paknsave.

Handsomedan: I've been suffering from a bit of insomnia lately - and it's starting to give me a bit of anxiety.

On a more serious note sleep is a very serious problem. GPs will take it seriously and work with you to eliminate possible causes and various possible medical conditions to reach a manageable level and can progress from there. The longer it's left without beginning down that road..

--Snipped--

Work is fine - it's not overly stressful and I have a great boss, but I just can't shake the anxiety and the insomnia.

I'd suggest that anxiety is the starting point. Even if you aren't consciously feeling it, subconsciously it's likely having an impact. Your brain is probably on high alert so you are waking up or having trouble going to sleep.

It may be worth taking an inventory of the stressors in your life, being brutally honest with yourself about your feelings about them, and then you can look at how (or if) you can address them, and reduce your anxiety about them. I found discussing those with my wife helped quite a lot.

Usually, with Anxiety, most people cope with some without issue, but everyone has a different point where they exceed their coping limits as I did last year, and then things can get a little or a lot wobbly.

Is boredom with food a mental health issue?

Recently I’ve found myself walking round supermarkets and utterly bored with seeing exactly the same things on the shelves week in, week out, year in, year out. There’s just so little effort to find new or interesting products.

I open the freezer and just stare at the same stuff and feel a sense of ennui that often leads me to just make a cheese sandwich or something instead of bothering to cook.

I’m so looking forward to heading to Portugal in October. New and interesting food!

Maybe an age issue rather than mental. Most people of a certain age are heartily bored of the status quo. Once you hit Portugal, you’ll have the added angst of trying to figure out what to order and realising you didn’t really want to eat brain salad with lemon and olive oil dressing.
The change of pace and liveliness will be invigorating though.

I had to take one of our dogs on a one way trip to the vet today. She was diagnosed a month or so ago with Mast Cell Tumours which the vet considered inoperable. We chose not to subject her to Chemo as the vet thought she'd hate it and it would at best delay the inevitable for a few weeks.

She went downhill over the long weekend and stopped eating, amongst other things.

Whilst it always sad to lose a pet, for me the worst thing was seeing my wife in such distress. I do not do well with human emotions, most especially from the very small number of people I am close to. I hate things I cannot solve.

So it's been a pretty stressful kind of day, all in all. I am pleased the dog is no longer in pain though.

My friend's dog died of cancer in August last year and I had a really close relationship with her as I used to see her every weekend and looked after her often while my friend was away. I still think about her a lot.

My friend and I bought some items from this place and found that it helped with the grieving process.

Personally I am a cat lover but I fully appreciate the bond one can have with any animal. I lost a cat I still grieve for 11 years ago and it was just horrible. You have my full sympathy.

I'm coping but it's definitely been a bit more of a struggle than usual the last few weeks.

I've had two friends pass away in quick succession on top of the first anniversary of SWMBO going into hospital and next week will be the first anniversary of her death.

Reading Lias and the Geektastic have put some perspective on my whingeing about a cold just before travel. Grateful not having to deal with the issues above. A reminder there is always something worse happening around us.

Sorry you guys are having it rough.

Lias I really feel for you and wish that time will eventually soften the pain. My own response to mental woes is distraction. The less you dwell on something the easier it becomes to deal with. Rumination is the worst thing because it usually exacerbates the negatives.

Coffee with a friend or popping into a shop to browse at what interests you can be uplifting and enough of a distraction to keep moving forward and changing negative thoughts. Sit in the sun, we spend too much time inside gazing at devices.

Another one way trip to the vet for this thread. Our Border Collie. Our best mate for a little shy of 15 years. Our walking pal, and my gardening buddy. Trying to hold it together for the rest of the family here at home has utterly failed. Even though we knew that, at his age, this was coming sooner rather than later, it's been a difficult end to a difficult day. The coming days and weeks aren't going to be easy.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

No way to speed the process. You just have to work through it. The only consolation is that it does get better over time.

As someone who has always struggled to form close relationships with other people, I personally find losing an animal to be harder than losing a human. I think it's the sense of absolute responsibility that you have over animals.

When I'm at the end of my life I will be thinking about all the animals that have come and gone over my lifetime.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your pets. It's a tough time to go through. As trite as the usual platitudes may sound, they are largely true. I found it of great comfort in the tough moments, that grief is the price you pay for love.
