The emotional benefits brought by animals is extraordinary. I don't know how I would cope with the pressures of life without regular snuggles from adorable fur babies.

News this morning that foster parents are urgently needed for kittens. Good time to have a trial run.

Yep, coming in to kitten season again so the rescues will be filling up fast and needing people to both foster and adopt (or foster to adopt in some cases).

I know I couldn't do fostering as I'd get too attached.  But my current two "kittens" (4 and nearly 4 years old) seem happy to be my emotional support animals.  On their terms as always.

Thank you! I adopted her from a rescue charity where she was being fostered by an amazing group of people after being found in a car that was scheduled to be crushed for scrap metal in a car yard. One of my friends mentioned that we saved each other and she's right, kitty's been a joy to be with. She's brought me so much already in only two short months πŸ™‚

I'm certainly a cat person but last time I checked, my landlord (Te Toi Mahana) didn't allow pets. Not sure if anything's changed, and even then I'm not necessarily in a financial position to own one.

Cats protection league in Brooklyn help with costs if you adopt an older cat. As for landlord maybe you could ask if you could foster on a temporary basis.

Summer rain can be oddly therapeutic. I've done a few 3D artworks based on that theme.

I can confirm, we're currently fostering 3 kittens that are only 4 weeks old - the whole house is attached to them and handing them back will not be easy.

Not sure they can do that according to this https://www.tenancy.govt.nz/starting-a-tenancy/tenancy-agreements/rules-about-pets/#id_60921529-quiet-enjoyment

I'd love a cat but I don't know how my boys would take to it. Plus, I don't think apartment living is ideal for a cat, either - I'd want it to have some grass to run around on.

Many tenancy agreements don't allow pets. As a landlord you can't charge an increased bond or in many cases recover damage made by pets from the bond. It makes it far too hard as the landlord so many, including me, don't allow pets.

Though this may be changing: https://www.tenancy.govt.nz/about-tenancy-services/news/government-announces-proposed-pet-related-changes-to-tenancy-laws/

More generally, here’s the guidance on the current law which makes for interesting reading: https://www.tenancy.govt.nz/starting-a-tenancy/tenancy-agreements/rules-about-pets/

It all comes down to risk and reward. As a landlord I'd rather charge less rent than the maximum (which I do) and have less risk and tenants without pets.

If it was a tenant who had been living there long term it may be a different story but I'd still be hesitant.

General Mental Health not great this week.

  1. Car broken into - attempted car theft, but just damaged. Not enough for a write-off, just enough that we will pay an excess, be without the car for a couple of weeks and don't qualify for a loaner, as there's no third party to put the expense onto
  2. Cost of living increases seem to be forever affecting us - we've gone from being comfortable enoug that a $500 unexpected bill won't cause issues to "Where the hell are we supposed to get that money from?"
  3. Went to the quack to have a suspect looking mole looked at. Got referred to a specialist. It's nonmelanoma skin cancer and needs to be cut out - and then he found some more which also need to go.

    1. I am accutely needlephobic, so having been booked in for surgery, I am now having a small panic attack every few minutes as the intrusive needle thoughts enter my brain
    2. Being told that you have "cancer" isn;t very fun. I know it's not a massive deal these days, but it's quite sobering - especially when the doc writes "Surgery ASAP" and circles it three times and underlines it on the patient info sheet.

Overall, it's feeling like we just can't cut a break at the moment. Between my wife having just recovered from her surgery, the dog still recovering from his and me having an upcoming surgery, plus the usual financial pressures that middle class families face, I am starting to feel a bit...whelmed.

Bring on a lotto win.

I have had four surgeries on the same place to get rid of a suspect mole which turned out, in the biopsy, to be melanoma. Brought mortality to the forefront of my mind for the first time in my life. Bit of an adjustment but in the long run has improved my mental health as I am less likely to sweat the small stuff.

Yeah it messes with your head, somewhat.
As much as we might dismiss the thought of Melanoma/skin cancer in passing, when it happens to you, it becomes very real and quite something to wrap the old noggin around.
