Having a difficult time getting through this last week, largely career-related. Not an enjoyable place to be pre-Xmas.

The festive season can certainly be a trial. I hope the rest of week zooms through without any fuss and from the weekend you can relax and recharge.

I'm not loving my job right now either, but thankfully it's a little quieter this week and there's less complaints.

Job market is difficult at present in my chosen field (and my level and age don't help that).

Roll on 2022, I say!

Also mentally decided that if work isn't going to change, it's time to change jobs. Have given them one last chance to come to the party with decent salary but if anyone wants a vocal autistic senior infra / system engineer, hit me up lol.

Update.. Can confirm it is indeed a VERY good time to put yourself on the market if your a senior IT type person in Wellington. In under 2 weeks I had two offers on the table with pay rises the size of a respectable new car. When I had a meeting with HR to try and get a pay rise around half that to stay they treated me like I was something they wanted to scrape off my shoe, so that made my decision much easier. Had my farewell morning tea today and start a new job in early-mid January :-)

Usual nerves about a new job etc but definitely feels like the right decision at this point.

Awesome, congrats. Encouraging.

I was made aware of a listing for a job in my field for someone who is pre-qualified paying 20% more than I am, when I'm at 3.5 years post-qual experience. Absolutely took the wind out of my sails and made me just feel like a total failure - we're a one income household at the moment and I'm angry as much as anything else, given my partner is also struggling. I wouldn't know myself on a current market salary for the role I'm currently actually doing.

All I did was flag myself as "Available for work" to recruiters on LinkedIn and Seek and my phone/email just went nuts. I was told by more than one recruiter that there are skill shortages across all sorts of areas, so might be well worth your time to see what's out there.

My LinkedIn is a total bombsite, I find the whole culture that has developed around it extremely off-putting. But needs must, I guess.

There's nothing wrong with putting some feelers out and testing the market, even apply and go to an interview or two to get a feel for what they are after and willing to pay for it.

Need to ask yourself a question about your current employer. Will they be there for you or your family if you need genuine help? Will they show any loyalty to you? If not, then you need to think about what's best for your family and yourself as not many companies beyond small family run outfits will stick by employees when they need support the most, beyond what they are obligated to.

But please don't chase money for only the sake of money. You'll be even more frustrated and lacking purpose, simply trading time for money with no long term benefit. And if you're on a single income, perhaps stability is more important in this season of life (like after just having a kid).

But now is indeed a great time to ride the wave (I got a huge raise changing companies that would have taken me 10 years at my old one), just accept that within some industries you can also get bumped off fairly easily and have it blamed on covid cost cutting etc.

Don’t assume that a family run employer will be any better - often they are far worse.

You are not married to an employer and your don’t “owe” them anything beyond your best efforts to do your job while you are employed. You are paid for your best efforts and that’s really as far as loyalty goes. If things get tough they will get rid of you to save the organisation, which is as it should be.

You have to grab opportunities when they are around as they will disappear soon enough and then you are left with nothing.

As a manager I believe that getting staff to achieve their potential is an important critical factor of the role. If that means that in order for them to do that they have to leave then that is fine, I have done my job. I don't take it personally it is business. Another critical factor, staff welfare and wellbeing I take very seriously and will do my upmost to help being mindful not to overstep the limits and involve myself in their personal life without a very clear request to do so.
