I suspect the partner was rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect of making an easy $1,000 for that piece of crap

I'd be quite concerned about someone who would try to sell this to a family member for $1000
You would hope there's some leg pulling going on, either in the family or in this thread.

Looks like the bike is from the 90's. Guessing 25 years old based on the components? My brothers bike was very similar from around that time.
That bike belongs in a museum.
Agree with everyone else. Stay away from that bike. No way is that worth 1K.
You can get a decent entry level MTB hard tail from any bike store for under 1K, with better brakes and gearing. Good luck. Biking is certainly easier on the knees and joints.
I used to be a runner but found that the body took a pounding over the years, changed to biking and MTB, so much better now, enjoy getting out in the fresh air, forest and nature with no strain or stress on the body (unless you fall off, which happens)

Normally I’d recommend people also look second-hand, because if one is patient there are decent bargains to be had of bikes in close to as-new condition going for way less than new prices. But the caveat here is it helps to have a decent knowledge of what to look for in a contemporary bike so as to avoid $1000 disasters like the OP has been generously offered.
In this situation purchasing from a bike shop sounds advisable, and it’s impressive what a budget of $1k will get these days, going by some of the links given prior.
Went into my local bike shop today and saw these 2 I really like. Not a lot of options but it's local and the guy is really helpful. The whole buying bikes online thing turns me off a bit.

That's $4k. Did you find some extra budget?

Yea that is a stretch $4k but if I get serious in the future I imagine that bike would grow with me more than the other. If it's justifiable then maybe I could afford it.
Almost fell off my seat when I looked at the OP's photos..... I must be sitting on a gold mine at home if he can get $1k for that :D
I need to get one of the bikes at home sorted so I can start riding again and hit Woodhill for a bit of fun :)

I really like the idea of buying my bike locally so if there are problems or something breaks I can just wheel it down the road and have a human to talk to. But with the whole online experience it could take me weeks for simple problems to get solved and when I buy it I don't get to try it. The sad part is were I live selection is very limited.
