Linuxluver: There's a pretty good chance I'll have Covid by the time I get there. Almost everyone I know who's gone overseas has had to allow for a week of Covid on arrival. I've made sure my travel insurance includes full health cover.

Myself and another have recently returned from a trip to Europe - 18 and a bit hours to Dubai, and another 6 and a bit hours on a smaller plane from there, then the reverse just over a week later.

Been home long enough that symptoms would be showing, and both tested -ve this morning as required by work.

It's not all doom and gloom.

What about the train? More space, especially if you pay extra, and the scenery is spectacular.

I've taken the train a couple of times. It's expensive and slow.I did really enjoy it. In the winter it's unreliable. My daughter took it a few years ago from Vancouver and got to Toronto two full days after the scheduled arrival. Lots of snow caused huge problems. :-)

That would be fine, in a way, but I have dates by which I need to be places. Good suggestion, though!

Desperately trying to balance expectations for seeing family over Christmas (some visiting from overseas for the first time in years) and the desire not to catch covid, because if I catch it I will miss the birth of my child the following week.

I'm avoiding xmas shopping and postponing random shopping while the shops are full of coughing non-mask wearers. Most busy places I've been there's always one person with a horrible uncontrolled cough to keep away from. Very few people are wearing masks, although I feel mask wearing is starting to increase a bit. I do not want to ruin Xmas with covid.

Linuxluver: I'm lucky enough to be retired and have no children in the house and don't need to go anywhere where there will be masses of unmasked people.

I wear my N95 to the shops and never eat out or go to cafés. My wife and adult daughter do the same. None of us have had Covid so far.

I've just had my 2nd booster as I'm going to Canada in mid-January for a couple of months. I've booked a Skycouch on the long flight so no one is sitting next to me. But the Vancouver-Toronto flight will be problematic. If it wasn't winter I'd rent a car and spend 4 days driving to Ottawa.

went all over usa and canada.

99.9% don't wear masks, everything packed like sardines. inc planes, airport queues, public trainsport, stadiums, theatres, markets.

life went on like normal.

seems like higher chance of catching it in NZ for some reason.

So many gatherings to spread it at this time of year, and so many people who just don't seem to care!

She wears a mask all the time, but probably just a matter of time before it invades here unfortunately.

Sorry to hear. A workmate got a positive result yesterday and will be isolating for Xmas too. Quite a tough break. Thankfully, whilst he is struggling it seems to be not too bad relatively.

Daughter, son-in-law and 5 month old grandson all have the dreaded 'vid.

First Christmas for the GS and he will be locked away at home..... sigh

We will be video chatting while opening prezzies , already did the drop and run with their stuff as well as take Chrissy food around to them.

But won't be quite the same.

Friend caught covid, didn't seem too bad however he slowly lost his power of speech and rational thought. Is now in full time hospital care. It seems he developed Covid encephalitis. The symptoms are very strange, there are some things he can do perfectly but others he has totally lost control over. Got the tough news a couple of days ago that there's a chance he could take a turn for the worse at any time, but trying not to think about that. He and his girlfriend have had a rushed bedside wedding.

Under 50, fully vaxxed and boosted. Fit and healthy.

My sister is now in month 4 of not being able to work due to long covid, and now this. I was never complacent about it (still mask up in public places), but it goes to show just how dangerous this disease can be.
