Wastewater testing has so much potential, for various viruses.
Cruise ships should probably get regualr testing for early warning
if their procedures to keep Nonovirus etc to low levels is working.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/07/13/norovirus-cases-on-cruise-ships-skyrocket-heres-why-and-how-to-avoid-getting-sick/?sh=f6c86441f2ed

What drugs in what proportions are being used in which suburbs for public health initiatives.
Wastewater testing from America shows the new infection cycle running through there.

As for reported cases, its down to 'canaries in the coalmine', Medical and various essential works.
Aged care is being hit repeatedly, so you have to do testing and tighter infection control,
and it has consequences as I understand.
With limited space and the many shared spaces in aged care, and 'very' limited staff.

Getting antivirals to be sure as you are older, have a minor other conditions that could be worsened,
cancer treatment, or most other operations etc.

How many people actually report having it now?

Who do you actually report it to, and why?

huckster:

Had my first +ve a couple of months ago followed by a dry, hacking cough that hung around for a LONG time only disappearing after some drugs but it then came back, so take it easy.

Regrettably, my cough is still with me over a year later. Can only echo the take it easy sentiment.....

I’m now 16mths past my first and only bout and I still have a cough. Just a trip up 2 flights of stairs is enough to bring it out.

We paid for a friend to fly out here from England across christmas, his ex wife was visiting across the holidays with the kids and he wanted to spend some time with them here in his home country and have them visit their grandparents.  The plan was he would have them for 10 days, then his ex for the last 10 days down in Palmy.

We went down to Waitomo on day 2 of their trip to stay overnight at a farm that had animal tours, then next day visited the glowworm caves and also the kiwi house at Otorohanga.   The day after we returned (so day 4 in the country) my friend came down with it.  His Dad also tested positive, no doubt one of them gave it to the other.

So from his perspective that's it for the trip pretty much.  All our plans and bookings up in smoke.  He cannot see his kids until he's better, which will likely be about the time they head off to Palmy.   The kids didn't get to visit their grandparents on his side and most likely won't before they leave given the gran has today come down with it (inevitable I guess).

It's just one of those things, but what a bugger.  He's gutted he is missing out of what would have been super quality time with his kids, his ex moved to a different city in England recently so he doesn't get to see them very often (he is in the process of trying to move to that city, but it takes time).  Damn you covid!

And fairly unbelievably, its his first time getting covid AND he was a nurse on the front lines in the UK during the pandemic.   The tested him for antibodies and he had none, so it wasn't like he had caught it and was asymptomatic.

At this point I think anyone flying long haul is really playing against the odds.

Yep. Wife and I have also tested positive today, after previously managing to avoid the virus. It arrived from England with our son, who is visiting for the first time in nearly five years. We knew this was highly probable, and with two people next to him coughing throughout the 15 hour long final leg it was a really very low chance the virus hadn't piggybacked along. Such is life.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Guess I am about to put that to the test in a few weeks. I can't get a booster before I go (8 days short of 6 months), and unlikely I will be able to access antivirals in other countries.  I did get it when I did a very similar trip in Jan this year but was fortunate it was very mild (despite a very bright red line in the test result!).  Symptoms lasted only 3 days, two of those being on a weekend (no deep chest involvement either).  By the time I was suspicious & tested it was almost over.  By good fortune it had minimal impact in that case.  But there is a real chance that getting covid on the upcoming trip could have severe impacts. Almost better to get it here where there is access to antivirals if needed ...?  (Yes, joking.  Would not be convenient at all right now.  But potentially much more impact if get it while away so can see some logic in the idea).

Have you checked with your doctor? The 6 month interval is "recommended".

"If you are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, we recommend you talk to your doctor or specialist for advice on the timing of your next dose. It may be appropriate for you to get your COVID-19 vaccine sooner than 6 months." I've seen 4 months mentioned as the minimum. Maybe a prescription for it rather than walking in.

I spoke (in person) with a lady at reception at my medical centre. She looked up my records, and then said I could not get another booster until the full 6 months was up. Told me the first date I could get it knowing that was 8 days after I depart. Still quite adament I could get one earlier. Was well aware of my age (mid-seventies) and the reason I was keen to get it earlier (round world + work trip with dozens of in-person meetings). I got the clear impression she was not interested in discussing it any further.

I would not be satisfied with that answer. If 6 months was absolute it wouldn't be a recommendation. To get a booster you MUST have received both initial doses. At my GP's reception staff are clerical, you discuss medical issues with your GP or a nurse.

Wasn't discussing medical issues.  Just tried to make an appointment for a booster shot a week or so before I leave.  Have already had five shots so well and truly past 'both initial doses'!

I mentioned initial doses to illustrate the use of must in that case. If 6 months was that important surely they'd say must instead of recommended.

Our kids school and daycare postponed then eventually cancelled whanau events in the lead up to Christmas due to staff illness.

Yet daily during pick up and drop off I am the only adult I see masked except for the after school program they've been masked throughout.

If we're forced to play the numbers game makes sense to breathe in less virus, of any sort.
