neb: Was just running a firmware upgrade on my ADSB receiver, looked at the stats while I was waiting, and realised that there's an awful lot of empty space in the flight tracking. Compared to three weeks ago there's almost nothing there, and the few flights that are tracked are mostly local. Almost all air travel to Auckland has ceased.

Until Auckland gets back to level 2 it will prety well stay that way since so much traffic hubs through Auckland.. Most of the domestic traffic at the moment are air ambulances, ag aircraft and the police helicopter. That's it.

Yup, that's exactly what I was seeing - I needed to track a few flights to make sure the update was working OK and if it hadn't been for those I'd have been waiting a long time for sample data.

My mother in law died last night. She was 90 so her death while being a sad event is not entirely unexpected .

Now my wife and her family have to see what happens with the Wellington covid announcement in a couple days time. Will they be able to send her off with 10 people? 100 ?

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I'm so sorry to hear that. My Mum is of a similar age. If she were to pass having only 10 at the funeral just wouldn't cut it. It would mean close family members would not be able to attend. Then comes the decision of who can go. Pretty damn tough.

As highlighted in another post, 10 is everyone not 10 family members. The celebrant, Funeral Director and any other such people are part of that 10.

Personally I think in the case of funerals it should be possible to have more than 10 provided social distancing can be properly managed at the venue. Funerals are a pretty important part of the grieving process and I think having a hard limit of 10 is a bit harsh.

I'm hoping we'll be lucky enough to slip into the next lower level in a few days. Even so, my MIL has a large family ( Catholic 😀 ) and knows and is known by many people locally.

To fit the full attendees in she'd need a couple of sittings at 100 each.

There must be 1000s of people that have had to go through limited funerals thanks to covid.
Each one a small tragedy.

Commiserations.

I've had two in-laws die during lockdowns but not from Covid. We have organised special gatherings once group size isn't restricted. That has worked very well because they are like family reunions.

I'd be surprised if we move to Level 2 in Wellington. Given that there is still potential for community transmission here and the PM has not, AFAIK, changed her view that each cycle is about two weeks. So I expect we'll have one at least two weeks in Level 3.

I went to a funeral yesterday, 10 people, but that included the Minister, Funeral Director, assistant and video guy, so it was 6. Plenty of opportunity to have many more than 6 as long as the same distancing and masks applied. When the service ended everyone went home, it was a disappointing experience.

I don’t know if this is more appropriate here or in the general thread, but reading the funeral posts above it definitely affects GZers as much as everyone else.

With the voracity of D, I wonder whether there should be more than 4 alert levels? They were a good first hit in March last year and have been tweaked around the edges but perhaps it is time for something a little more nuanced. Michael Baker suggested 7 levels and that would mean an intermediate step between each of our current levels. In the case of a funeral, if you stay in your bubble separated from other bubbles, why can’t more people attend? Even if you had to isolate and get a test after attending a funeral/Tangi I’m sure people would be willing to do it. No, having said that, people couldn’t be trusted to follow the protocols.

I have a relative in the building industry in the Waikato and by the middle of next week it won’t matter if they go to Level 2 because the building materials they need are stranded in a warehouse in Auckland. So even if building sites in Auckland can’t open until L3, supply businesses that can prove they can operate safely and supply the rest of the country with ‘non-essential’ goods under a Level 3.5 could go ahead, that would at least be something.

The levels needs to be simple to understand. While there may be logic in 7 levels, I doubt it would be simple enough for the general public to understand or follow.

Agree. Not many it seems follow the pandemic as much as we do here. They can be upgraded to cater for Delta.

I am not sure if someone mentioned it on this thread or a private conversation, but some have received emails asking if they had disconnected the receivers or if the configuration is correct since no flights are being recorded from their equipment...

Not a lot reported by me in the last week, and my aerial (in Whanganui) can 'see' all the flights between Auckland and Wellington or the South Island
(the black diagonal cross hatching squares are whole hours with no traffic reported)

The brief burst of activity Friday morning is normally what it looks like for most of the day. Also it's a bit misleading because it records the number of positions, not the number of flights, so the police helicopter hovering for 45 minutes will create an apparent high reading. In particular the darkest-blue square on there is just seven aircraft.
