Fred99:

Not disagreeing - but if I was the OP I'd take the meds as the Dr suggests and to hell with it -  it's a one-off phobia (needles) not more general / constant anxiety.
They work - brilliantly.  Enjoyably too - which has the potential to be a problem if you (think you) need them all the time.

It's a belt-and-suspenders thing, presumably the meds will be a very mild benzodiazepine because they can't risk sedating you to the point where you can't safely drive or whatever. So yes, definitely take the meds, but they're usually used as a complement to other anxiety-management techniques, with the two reinforcing each other.

Had my first jab last night. Sore arm this morning but nothing else so far.

The sore arm seems to be the first side effect with others kicking in a bit later. I had my vaccination at 10:45 on Wednesday and was slightly drowsy when I got up on Thursday morning - a bit like you'd expect when you haven't slept well. It gradually improved until I eventually decided I was good to go out for a short run late afternoon and I was fine thereafter.

Overall I'd say the side effects were very minor, but the second dose might have more of an impact.

Second jab on Thursday. Dull muscle ache in the upper arm on Thursday night, mainly when raising the arm. Also slight neck muscle pain, which I didn't have with the first jab. All good Friday morning, and still fine today.

Had my 2nd jab last Friday, polar opposite of my 1st one. Took the advice to get it in my leg, had some soreness at the site on Saturday, other than that no real side effects at all.. Compare to the 1st one kicking my arse was very pleasant surprise.

@Handsomedan:

I'm a trypanophobe (as I have mentioned her on GZ many many times). I'm booked in for my vaccine and it's caused sleepless nights and anxiety etc and I still have 3 weeks until my first jab!

I've just got off a phone consult with my doc who is going to prescribe "the good stuff", so I can get through this, but as it turns out, my 14yo is in a worse state than I am (obviously a learned behaviour in conjunction with a bad experience last time he was vaccinated for something).

I'm so over being told "It doesn't hurt", "Its a small needle", "Put on your big-boy pants" etc...I'm also over being lumped in with the naysayers and conspiracy/anti-vax/flat-earth/anti-5G nuts.

So am I. I just look away and think about complete nothing.

9 times out of 10 it doesn't hurt.

every time it doesn't hurt i commend the technician.

as for the vaccine both jabs didn't hurt one bit, had them in the same spot.

oh and the reason i think is when i was about 6 i had a very bad experience with a blood test. one single experience. lasted probably what 25 seconds. these things happen, and the consequences are immeasurable, can last a life time. i think i ran away from school when it was time for my 12 year old vaccine. yeah crazy but it's funny now that i have found a way to deal with it. but don't ask me to give blood lol. i did it twice just to show off and i think i'm done.

Just had an email from our Mt Medical Centre, Mount Maunganui, via Manage My Health, that they are now offering COVID-19 vaccinations to registered patients 💉😀

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Can anyone tell me how to bring my 2nd shot appointment forward?

I got my first shot on 02-Sept so my 21 days are up this Thursday on 23-Sept. My 2nd appointment was booked for 14-Oct which was the standard 6 weeks that was in place at the time to allow more people to get their 1st shot. I'm trying to reschedule my second appointment now through the website but it won't offer me any slots prior to the 14-Oct no matter what location I choose. I know that slots are available before the 14-Oct as it will allow me to make a new appointment for a first shot.

I know I could just rock up to a drive through centre after the 21 days but my work requires a bit more pre-planning so I'd rather the certainty of a confirmed appointment.

@Senecio you are likely aware that the original 3 week spacing was about speeding up the rollout, but the longer 6 weeks gives a better longer term level of protection.  Does your role or personal circumstance make it highly desirable to get the second jab ASAP?

It may be worthwhile calling Healthline and asking if they will actually let you gett he second one sooner, to avoid the circumstance where you rock up early and are turned away.

Current recommendations are 6 weeks delay between 1st and second to maximize effectiveness. When I had mine done, it was only 3 weeks.

Thanks. Yes, fully aware of the better long term protection. There's nothing specific about my personal circumstances, I would just like to get my second jab sooner rather than later.

I firmly believe that we are all going to need regular boosters anyway so the extra long term protection that 6 weeks offers isn't really a deciding factor for me. I know that 2 shots offers better protection than 1 shot and that's what's most important to me. Especially if we are going to start moving down the alert levels in Auckland while there is still (albeit controlled) community transmission occurring.

I'd still recommend waiting as long as you possibly can. You'll likely find most places won't even offer you or let you have one 3 weeks out unless you have extenuating circumstances.

We will be in L3 for a couple of weeks I'd imagine, if not L4 for another week. Stay home, stay safe and try and wait it out.

Both my wife and I had planned to get our second jab after 8 weeks. Based on recent events, should I change to to six weeks?

Does an extra 2 weeks make that much of a difference?

Tomorrow it would make it 4 weeks.

I was 4.

The delay was in part due the supply issues.

Now the focus is on sooner rather than later. So bringing it forward is advised. When everyone is due to get boosters, the negligible decay between 3 and 6 that it was meant to overcome is somewhat moot since we have done the majority of middle public in a lump.
