Me: "I've never been beaten half to death, but I am confident I won't like it, even having not tried it".

This genuinely made me chuckle.

That is the family-friendly version. What I actually say is considerably more.... adult orientated.

I have never consumed alcohol as a beverage.

So how have you consumed it? 😀

I don't drink, it is incredible how threatened folks can be by me saying no to alcohol and often asking if I have a drinking problem. Then there are the alcohol pushers who try to force booze on me and when I refuse it several times they seem to think I am some kind of alien.

Oh God, this, so much this. I have never consumed alcohol as a beverage. The number of conversations that has started where people want to know why and then start making assumptions is huge. I've had people spike my drinks, threaten me, all sorts. It's crazy.

Them : "How do you know you don't like it till you try it"

Me: "I've never been beaten half to death, but I am confident I won't like it, even having not tried it".

He, that is funny indeed.

I think most people would be curious for your reasons, that's all. What with most others drinking at least a little, and all.

We have a couple people in the extended family who don't drink any more, in one case the poor fella really went off the rails. He's come back to the light though, which is great. When drinking becomes alcoholism it's very ugly and destructive.

My view is that the drinking culture of the next generation starts with me, so I don't tell stories about my yoof in front of my kids and they see their parents have a quiet drink or two from time to time.

Now that they're teenagers the curiosity is rising and recently my lad asked 'dad have you ever been drunk?' Cue white lie along the lines of 'well, I did once get a little tipsy, but I didn't enjoy it'.

Ah - great answer. I was thinking IV, snorted, enema ....

But then, you can just say you 'have never consumed alcohol' because in cooking all the alcohol would have evaporated out, leaving just the flavour.

However, trifle, rum balls ...?

Are those common ways you consume alcohol? You obviously have lived a wild life compared to me :)

I've also never consumed recreational drugs, or been to a strip club.

I don't generally judge those who consume alcohol unless they act like an ahole or idiot as a result. We do keep alcohol in the house for guests, but it's relatively limited.

Having been in the commercial side of alcohol production I have seen both those that can regulate alone and moderately and those that just have an on button to oblivion.

Yes, some need help and guidance, but on the whole it seems that many can make the decision themselves.

As some have said here, it doe's amaze me when an individual does not "drink" or chooses low/no alcohol that they are treated like a lepper in social situations.....that one still confuses me

It beats the heck out of me, I have dealt with it for years. I never condemn those who drink alcohol, that is their choice and i am OK with it. I have always kept a selection of Wines and Spirits etc  and non alcoholic beverages at home for visitors.

Heh!

My 21yo son has never had an alcoholic drink and is adamant he never will. I have no idea what lead to this but I think it is marvelous. One less thing to worry about and a lot less expense for him.

17yo daughter likes an occasional cider but never seen her get past two on an evening so seems like she's quite capable of managing herself responsibly. Sadly a lot of people cannot.

Our 15yo lad, who knows.

My trifles don't have alcohol, and contrary to popular belief, even when cooking with alcohol, cooking doesn't always remove all traces.

Regardless, I think you get what I was trying to say about my alcohol consumption.

Virtual non-drinker here. I do drink Heineken Zero since it became widely available in bars. As an occasional it's pleasant and even somewhat relaxing and soporific without the alcohol if you like the taste. Strangely if people offer me meth or marijuana they accept a polite no thanks as an answer. Turning down alcohol it's 20 questions and listing to a bunch of random stuff..

It's not even close to removing all traces, unless you cook it out for hours. Saying that unless you are cooking with large amounts of straight vodka you are consuming such small amounts of booze it really doesn't matter. It's much the same as bread doesn't get you drunk, despite it containing alcohol from fermentation.

Ive never had that problem when I choose not to drink . Perhaps its a matter of perception.
Just as those who gave up ciggies will get questions about how & why .

What I do get is a bad response when I refuse to drink instant coffee (or day old drip coffee)  when offered that.

Ive moved onto low alcohol beer .
Its sometimes hard to get nice, tasty low alcohol beer. Local supermarkets are often out of stock . Bars might have a choice of 1 .
It costs the same OR MORE for some reason .

I know it's considered raro by some of the more avid drinking enthusiasts but I legitimately enjoy Export Citrus Zero if it's on offer and will have that as a first choice.

When I went through my winding down drinking phase I was using them to sustain a night out and in the end I just started with them, only actually drinking beer if someone shouted a round and stuck one in my hand.

I just wish they cost less than a normal beer, which I think is an excise issue by way of still being fermented and therefore caught in that net. .
