GV27:

gzt: I do drink Heineken Zero since it became widely available in bars. As an occasional it's pleasant and even somewhat relaxing and soporific without the alcohol if you like the taste.

I know it's considered raro by some of the more avid drinking enthusiasts but I legitimately enjoy Export Citrus Zero if it's on offer and will have that as a first choice.

When I went through my winding down drinking phase I was using them to sustain a night out and in the end I just started with them, only actually drinking beer if someone shouted a round and stuck one in my hand.

I just wish they cost less than a normal beer, which I think is an excise issue by way of still being fermented and therefore caught in that net. .

I don't think excise is flat. The excise rate depends on the strength of the drink - source: a customs officer told me her job was going round to breweries to audit their alcohol strength measuring systems.

So, yes, you're paying over the odds for zero alcohol beer in a bar if they charge you the same as beer.

But then, why would a bar give a financial incentive for non-alcoholic drinks.

I doubt there is any excise on zero beer. The only time I purchased from a wholesaler was $25 for a dozen Heineken Zero. Not much different. Zeros are low volume product, and at least with some brands a more complex process involved.

DB export citrus I have not heard of. I've tried the export zero standard which was not to my taste at all. Keen to give the citrus a go if I see it around. Related point, it's near impossible to know what zeros a bar might stock unless you've been there before. Heineken and Peroni seem to be the most common with Heineken a long way ahead.

That one is indeed particularly refreshing on a hot day. Sadly it is very high in carbs/sugars so I tend to avoid. I try to stick with the low carb and low alcohol (2.5%) ones like Heineken light, Speights Summit Ultra. None of them are half as good as a proper IPA. Even the Epic Blue and Macs Ultra Violet IPA are not as good as their regular carb brothers.

Went out on Saturday night with a bunch of other 40's/50's/60's old folk and it was a fun night.

We've all known each other since we were really quite a lot younger (some as teens, others as early 20's etc) and we used to drink heavily as a social pastime.

We were drinking on Saturday night, but it'd be fair to say that as we have all aged, so have we mellowed. It was evident that the younger people in the bar were a lot more moderate than we were at their ages, too.

I stopped drinking at about 10.30pm as I was a bit over it and started drinking water (didn't stop me getting a hangover), but I noticed I wasn't alone - a friend who was a notorious boozer slowed right down after an initial flurry and nursed his last beer for quite a considerable time in the end. Then he also started drinking water.

We still have a booze culture, but I don't think it's quite what it once was. Which is definitely a good thing!

Nope, it won't be that. Excise is related to alcohol content. In addition, if the alcohol content is below 1.15 percent then the applicable excise rate is zero.

IRT low/no-alcohol beers, my current gold standard is Garage Project’s Tiny. This is a nice beer full-stop, not just “nice for a no alcohol beer”, and a must-try for those looking for something tasty but without the booze (bottle says it’s <0.5%).

From the Garage Project description:

Tiny is specially fermented to give you all the big, juicy hop character you’ve come to expect from a Hazy IPA - just without the alcohol. Yup that’s right. Big flavour, without the booze so you can enjoy your hazy anytime. Tiny, but mighty.

It came top of The Spinoff’s tasting published earlier in the year; I was somewhat wary, based on purchasing their previous ‘winner’ (Bavaria IPA) and finding it so heinous I still have 2-3 out of the original 4 bottles! But, based on their highly positive reviews I gave Tiny a go, and agree it’s a great drop.

Seems to be stocked by quite a few NW/PnS supermarkets, but I know they’ve had lots of demand which can mean it’s hard to find in some places.

These days I tend to only drink when I'm on Geekzone. I find that it makes my posts more interesting. 😄

I got a box of low/no alcohol beers from Beer Hug. Generally, I wasn't a fan. I might give this one ago. Perhaps you get used to them?

My point with this beer is I didn't have to get 'used to' it as (thank God) it shares none of those awful characteristics of a typical no alcohol beer - a cloying, chemical-like sweetness that makes it unpleasant to drink.

At least with the citrus beers they're enjoyable and tasty - more alcopops them beer, but still nice (noting the sugar content, of course!).

I think the fear of hangovers and of waking up in the middle of the night make a lot of us slow down as we age. I find if I have any drinks after about 9 pm, I will end up waking up in the middle of the night, and not be able to get to sleep. Also, hangovers these days are multi-day affairs that are just not worth it.

I enjoy my home brewing hobby, but these days, it very rarely goes past 'get a mild buzz going and then maintain it.'

Nice. I have similar ~annual catch ups with a bunch of old friends and in those circumstances, alcohol is great as a social lubricant.

Gives you something to do with your hands while talking for hours.
