Handsomedan:

I've lost count recently of the number of drivers (usually in silver or grey cars) who don't use their lights at dusk, in heavy rain or in some cases at night.
Lit up dashboards, which don't really change from day to night don't help - I'm sure some people think their lights are on, but they just have poor vision. Or they're just idiots...I'm unsure at this stage.

Also - DLR's are not headlights - put your headlights on auto, or just turn the damn things on.

DLR's are better than nothing, but agree they are not headlights.

I suspect a lot of the problem is actually the auto setting in many, if not most newer cars.  It's great if you have two options for the world, being daylight and nighttime.  Anything in between, either dusk, fog, rain etc, the auto sensor still thinks it's light enough not to need the headlights.

But for those cars without the auto mode, the meat-based switch operator is often less reliable, working on the basis of "I can see, therefore it's all good".

My current vehicle (2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid) has the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the auto-lights.
Will be interesting to see how that changes whe I get my BYD EV on Friday.

sen8or: I read that piece this morning too, my only real question is why was it necessary to point out the value of his car and his house, both are completely irrelevant to the story other than to try and paint him as a rich self entitled dickhead who had to be in the wrong.

That's probably an aspect for the Stuff/Herald topic.

Imo people who perform this kind of driving related assault on the road have demonstrated they are not fit to be on the road and this should be a driving offense with demerit points and license suspension etc like drink driving or whatever.

I recently went from Auckland to Hamilton and back on a day trip, it rained heavily all day and yet maybe only 1 in 4 drivers in the waikato had lights on, the moment I came back into Auckland most if not all cars had lights on.
I leave my lights on auto, but will turn them on when the weather is bad or if Im travelling long distances at any time.

Same here. Dad taught me to put the lights on when on rural roads, and I try to stick to that (although if I'm only going a few km then I don't tend to bother, unless it's dark or raining).

I put a piece of black duct tape over the sensor on my significant others' car, and the headlight switch gets permanently left on auto.

Outrage gets eyeballs and shares and people opening the link from social posts. Remember when the guy in the tesla with the sword attacked someone. They couldnt help themselves with saying what sort of car it was because it got the clicks.

We are only hearing one side of it from a probably over embellishing person looking for press coverage. The other side is correctly keeping quiet and will let it get sorted by the people that actually matter.

For all we know this guy was doing 70 in the right lane for ages on that 2 lane part and when they guy in the "expensive" car got past he flashed the brakes at the guy and he over reacted and started it all.

I was walking on the footpath alongside a 60 km/h road, minding my own business. Suddenly there was a HOOONK from a concrete truck, because the car in front of it had evidently suddenly slowed to a crawl. The car almost leapt onto the footpath about 20 m ahead of me, and the concrete truck passed, avoiding a collision.

By the time I'd caught up to the car, the driver was on the phone. My assumption is that the phone rang while she was driving, and she decided the middle of a busy road was a great place to slam the brakes on and answer it.

Once again I find myself wishing I'd thought to note down the plate number.

Just had an unmarked, grey mid-sized Nissan SUV speed past me with red and white flashing lights and a siren blaring. The lights were mounted on the inside of the front and rear windscreens. No light bar etc. The siren sounded awful, not like an emergency vehicle's siren. Ran two sets of red lights heading along Kapiti Rd in Paraparaumu and turned north on the expressway towards Waikanae. I have it on dashcam and am wondering if this should be reported online to 105.

I would if you have the details.  Either it's a genuine emergency vehicle and it's all good, albeit unexpected, or it's someone impersonating one which absolutely needs to be followed up.

I think some midwives make use of flashing lights?  I'd expect a roof mounted dome however.

"Doctors, nurses or midwives on urgent business may use a roof-mounted green flashing light. If you see these lights, you must pull over and allow the vehicle to pass."

Red and white doesn't appear to be an officially used combination.

Red is any emergency vehicle. White is in conjunction with red or blue. So red/white is any emergency vehicle, probably fire or ambulance.

Wellington Ambulance: Skip to about 20 seconds & 55 seconds. Red/white easily seen.

Definitely pass onto 105 online or message your district's FB page. Could be a more covert unmarked unit (not like others that are same make/model but in different colour and large aerials). Sound could have been different due to the speed they were going? Or rumbler?

Edit: Nvm saw red and white not red and blue hmm.

Wellington Free Ambulance doesn't have a vehicle matching that description.  FENZ potentially might do.  They do apparently have unmarked response vehicles.
