I had a special experience couple of days ago.  I was towing my boat straight through a roundabout in Nelson (Trafalgar and SH6). 

 

It's a two lane roundabout with a single lane exit in the direction I was travelling and I was in the left lane as required by the road markings. 

 

A guy in an SS Commodore entered the roundabout from behind me, cutting across the right lane and into the single lane exit ahead of me cutting me off.  All of this in a 50km area. Not sure how fast he was going but he passed about 13m of vehicle and trailer while crossing a round about so ...

 

He must have been very close to the mudguards which are rather unforgiving galvanised steel.

Put someone accustomed to LHD behind the wheel of a campervan that dwarves anything they have ever driven, then get them to drive on a narrow, winding road with an unforgiving verge and it's not that surprising.

 

Edit: looks like only one brake light working too ...

Fair enough, he/she was insecure on a windy road. BUT, even campervans have mirrors, and the right way to drive is to get to the side/signal/stop to allow someone to pass you when you see there are people behind you when you are driving like that.

The thing is that to pass, you have to be able to see 100m minimum of clear road in front of you, which looked difficult in that location. Also didn't look like there were that many areas to pull off the road on. So all anyone can really do is follow at the speed they were driving. I wold be more worried about oncoming drivers due to them crossing the centre line a lot. To be honest, I see worse driving than that on the Rimutukas most times I go over. Some people simply shouldn't be on the road. Those roads don't look to be suitable for vehicles of that size anyway.

Did you predetermine that  the driver may just pull out like that, in order to stop that quickly? Or did you just have to slam on the brakes.

I go down that road about 12 times a week, this is the first time this has ever happened, so yeah I slammed the brakes, luckily I wasn't going the full 50KM/h or any faster.

Yep plain incompetence.

 

That road isn't all that windy nor is the verge that unforgiving. There were places the driver could have pulled over, particularly where that other van was stopped. There was no need to drive straddling the centre line, the way he/she slowed down for the 45 km corner tells me they should never have been allowed to drive that vehicle.

What I thought was quite interesting was the number of NZ media organisations posting on the youtube video, wanting to contact the author. I am wondering if with all these dashcams, whether there is going to be a program featuring them.

The problem the driver has is they are not confident about where their left hand wheels are in relation to the edge of the road, so they won't pull over very far.  If they are struggling with the road, chances are they aren't even seeing their mirrors.

 

What they should do is adjust the left mirror so they can see the road edge and the left edge of the camper or maybe even a tyre.
