That may have been true when some Councils thought they would get all of the fine. The Government woke up and insisted on its 50%. Some Councils are quite forgiving (Tauranga??) possibly because it makes them the good guys.

this is what grinds my gears, you don't get a fine if you haven't done anything wrong.

if you are doing something wrong expect to get a fine and dont complain/winge about revenue gathering if you do get one. you choose to be in that situation.

if no one did anything wrong there would be no "revenue" to gather

I had written a letter explaining it had been for a check and had most of work done and was only o
parked outside my house while the scaffokding for earthquake repairs was removed. Sent photos and all.

It was turned down and I got my preliminary notice of court hearing yesterday.

the person in charge of chch ticketing is a pillock. Next door neighbour was 86..son visiting with newborn daughter with heart problems...had been in auckland starshop. She suddenly got into troubke, son grabbed neighbours car keys, backed the car on to road side, jumped in his own car ( which was up driveway blocked by neighboues car)and took off for hospital taking his dads keys with him. Dad/ neighbour got fined for being parked outside his own house for greater than 120 mins ( no keys to move it) and they didnt let him off. Completely unreasonable.

I have no issues paying reasonable tickets and have done regularly when meetings have run over and my meter has run out but bollocks like this just precipitates me off. Whst am I meant to do? Tell eqc to rack off and leave my car up the driveway?

Btw...reason new bulb didnt work...or failed after it wad fitted....rough roads thanks to council incompetence. Blew three bulbs on way home....auto sparky I took car too says they see lots of that. Aldo faiked retest as newly reconditioned brakes failed. Too much water on road. Wrnt back next day and retested fine. Seems hub deep water makes you fail brake tests. Now who is responsible for road drainage....oh yeah...the council.

I dont agree... beaurecrats and little hitlers will rack up legislation until they have someone to fine. If they dont they are out of work. It is now illegal to stand on a chair or couch to reach into a cupboard...thanks to OSH, patting a kid on tge head is assilt and even a handshake is covered under legislation as consentual assult.

yes it looks like they were a little harsh in your situation but they must get it all the time people trying to get off tickets and they have to draw the line somewhere. They would spend a large amount of time reviewing everyone who complained cases

I kind of agree with you, and kind of don't.

Where there is a clear infraction of a sensible law, then I agree that it should be enforced and that those caught have little to whine about. Particularly when they are doing something that seriously inconveniences others or raises material safety issues etc.

On the other hand, I have a degree of sympathy for people who haven't really done anything "wrong" in the sense that most people would understand it, but who are being hung on a technicality by a pettifogging bureaucrat who won't exercise an ounce of judgement, sympathy for circumstances reasonably beyond a person's control, or common sense. Even when the rules in question allow for discretion based on circumstances,

And, on the whole, while they don't have a monopoly on that type of behaviour councils do typically seem considerably worse at this than central government agencies. And there are, regrettably, some individuals who almost seem to enjoy using positions of petty authority to torment people.

godwins law allows a valid comparison to be made. Little hitler is an architype or stereotype not a direct comparison to nazi germanys fuehrer. borderline i agree but i'll take my chances.

the point about beaurecrats needing to find someone to fine is valid. E.g. OSH... need to find improvement in safety. It is their mandated task. This means even when fault or blame ot improvement cant be found they will. The system forces us to criminalise people even when sometimes stuff outside of our control happens.

It is amazing how the expiry dates on vehicle registration and warrant of fitness is hidden from view and only becomes visible after expiring, thus giving the vehicle owner no time to to deal with it before expired.

Let me out this in context for you.
I knew I was out of wof and rego. However the following prevented me getting it.
18k of late paying debtors.
major chest infections for two weeks putting me flat on my back...caused by environmental factors I
Garage flooded three times wrecking my workshop
house leaking like a sieve wrecking equipment
rat bite causing major infection leaving me on high dosage anti biotics for three weeks
eqc repairs on house
As well as the normal run of christmas, kids and work.

We barely paid rent and food over that time. Paying for rego ahead of time was a luxury we couldnt afford.

Im a proud surviver of chch. My business was wrecked. My clients buiness was wrecked. Infrastructure is syill buggered. Roads are a nightmare. Cars are getting wrecked at a masdive rate by rough roading. We are getting floided regularly and money in chch has bern a joke for most people until it started improving in the last few months. Most people I know are only just beginning to see positive movement businesswise. Did I go on the dole? No. Have I been running around whinging about it. No. Im finally out of debt. It took three years but I have gotten there but occasionally things like getting a rego ahead of time have to wait while i put food on my kids plates.

As much as it's not fun to hear it, hes right. From what you have posted you are not time wealthy, hence not getting WOF and Rego in the first place. Your quickest and probably cheapest option is paying the fines and moving on.

Call the council and explain why you had parked the vehicle on the road. Inform them that it was only temporarily and they should hopefully let you off. I was tickets once for parking my car with no rego outside of my house as I have no off street parking.
