Air travellers can now use phones, e-readers, tablets and MP3 players from gate-to-gate after the Civil Aviation Authority relaxed its rules around handheld portable electronic devices. Provided electronic devices are in non-transmitting mode, Air New Zealand will from this month allow them to be used for the duration of flights, the airline said today

It's always been a strange thing really. If it was really that big of a deal, how come more planes don't crash when people "forget" :)

From 16 July the airline will allow the use of handheld portable electronic devices including tablets, smartphones, e-readers and mp3 players during all phases of flight provided the devices are in flight mode. Previously customers could not use their devices during the taxi, take-off and landing phases of flight.

Initially this option will be available to customers travelling on domestic and international services operated by Airbus A320 and Boeing 787-9, 777-200 and 777-300 aircraft with plans to include Air New Zealand’s regional turbo prop and Boeing 767-300 fleets over time, subject to regulatory approval.

Rumours are that ZK-NZE, the first 787-900 is due in about 830. Not sure if it will do a city fly-by or just staged media shots after the arrival for the news.

It's not the electronic signals they worry about.
It's so people don't get distracted if an emergency occur during takeoff and landing.

So up until 15 July the plane will still fall out of the sky if I have my device on at take off or landing but after that it won't. They must need time to fit the "Flight Mode RFI don't fall out of the sky filter" thingy then.
