Given you've rejected the MX5, I'll take that as you care more about looks than handling.  In that case, I'd say a Z3, it looks more manly (James Bond drove one, you can't get much manlier) - personally I think the Z3 looks better than the Z4.

The Z3's handling is... well, it's no MX5.  On the plus side, a Z3 isn't too expensive these days (still more expensive than a 1st gen MX5).

FWIW: I owned an MX5 for a number of years, and I also used a Z3 on an off for a few months.  I often think about buying another MX5 one day (I had a 91 vspec), I don't have the same desire to buy a Z3.  Throwing the MX5 around tight hillside roads, snicking through the gears with that rifle-bolt of a shifter... damn near perfection.

If you can get over the "looks" (and actually, I like the 1st gen MX5 looks), I'd strongly recommend an MX5.

ghettomaster: Op never mentioned his budget so...

Ummmm, Given the angle on the GT wing they must be getting in excess of 100KG of downforce at 100kph. Dat drag and fuel consumption. The cold air intake is done wrong. Who in hell needs 2 pod filters on that engine. Not to mention the second one doesnt have cold air in. The intake should be closed circuit so there isnt the chance of hot air leaking in. Those rims were stolen off an Estima or WRX from south Auckland. The colour is what you get after eating too much butter chicken. All around a car of cancer.

A lesson on how to destroy a good car by throwing money at it when you have no taste.

I'd go a Z4 over a Z3. Less "round" looking.

I just stumbled across this as a serious suggestion for the OP although he hasn't mentioned what he thinks of bimmers.

200SX convertible?

I'm not the hugest fan because like all folding hard tops, it looks like you could land a plane on the boot, but still pretty cool.

richms: I think the crossfire looks great, whats wrong with the gearboxes? Just sloppy to drive or do they have breakdown issues?

The back end looks terrible, The the miles and miles of cheap plastic inside, meh. Try putting anything in the boot or reversing it. Terrible car. MX5/MR-S depends on the car and what mods have been done to them, stock they look like a girls car.

However an MR-S with a few tweaks starts to look the business. :-) The 350z also looks like amazing too. There are a few Z4's for cheap but I'd side step a european car, the smart roadstar is also interesting but not many good examples here. There are other cars but the prices start to jump up fairly quickly.
