KiwiNZ: If they are over $1000 an insurance claim maybe in order for a lost unit

That's going to depend entirely on your policy. Just looking at mine it covers at up $750 with no excess and only if keys are stolen.

Our policy covers loss by theft, lost or damage as a result of vehicle accident. We double checked this as two of our vehicles they remote is the only access and need to be present to start the vehicle. No traditional key.

I know with the Mondeo's at least buying a second key was relatively cheap (~$150) catch was you needed two keys to program it, (car cames with two remote keys plus a manual key) if you only had one or none keys it was about a $500 exercise form Ford. Morale of the story buy cars with at least two keys and get a third coded up as a spare before you need it :P

Given the amount of abuse keys get the added cost of a factory key is probably cheapest/best option longer term

i wouldn't trust a cheap chinese clone (ok ok i have ancient chinese blood i am allowed to say this) to unlock your car in the middle of nowhere

forks and knifes, underwears and jackets, fine. but not something where reliability is paramount

Well, on a happier note someone handed in my fob and I am happy. The car is a 2011 Ford Fiesta. In the long run, I think I will still look to get a spare remote online and  then find someone in NZ to cut the keys and pair it with my car's immobiliser.

As a rule, I've found NZers to be very good when it comes to handing in stuff that does not belong to them. I wasn't too hopeful initially as I thought I had dropped it on the bus but it turned out I dropped it at a Park and Ride station and some nice person handed it to customer service there.
