Zeon: Hey guys,
My tyres and each wearing more on the outside edge than the rest of the tyre and I hear a squeeking noise when I drive along. I'm guessing my wheel alignment is out?

I got a quote from the mechanic next to my office for wheel alignment and they said $295. From what I have seen in ads etc. this seems really high. What should be the kind of price I should be paying and any suggestions around the Mt. Wellington area to visit?

It could be he's driving it over to a tire chain and adding an overhead.  I recommend asking around about your local chain stores.  I had the local Tony's Tire Service cause me a load of problems with my steering a few years a go so I never use them, but I know people in other cities who swear by them.

My local Tony tyre aligned the failing steering three times over 2 years and three balded tyres later I questioned the boss and said hey I think something's not right.

Then he agreed and sent me to the mechanic who showed me the nearly disconnected steering ball rod. I'm glad it didn't break when I was coming down Arthur's pass

good question. that was a while ago ... in chch ... ah yes we took it to the "cheapest WOF in town" at sockburn. yes that came to mind too - how the *&^% did we get WOF on 2 occasions when obviously the R front wheel would have unacceptable "Play".

we take it to mechanics for WOFs since then. no more WOF "specialists"

I would have reported the WOF issuer. Their negligence put you, your family and other road users at serious risk.

That happened two weeks before the earthquake and once that happened, our lives changed quite a bit and yes, I should have reported them. Never went back.

A good wheel alignment technician will do a decent steering and suspension check before even putting a vehicle through an alignment, if you don't see them doing that check before an alignment, go somewhere else.
