I just purchased one of these and just wondered how many of you now have dash cams in your cars.

Got it for a couple of reason's , just wanted one and its a bit of a backup in an accident.

The one I got I thought was a reasonable price and the reviews i researched showed it was the best priced for quality.

I have got a 16gb micro sd card to put in it.

Yep. DVR-207 (the one they sell cheap clones of on 1-day all the time)

Was about to suggest the G1W or G50 which I recently saw running as a better alternate.

I started upping to a small FB page with a couple of mates around the country couple of years ago, but it's a lot lower under the radar than the other follow-on pages that have had managed to find their way into media attention.

got a cheep one off TM. Works well. Although it records sound, so my singing in the car might be a bit rough.

Was behind someone who crashed and on reviewing the footage, you could see she didn't even break (no break lights). As she ran in to a stopped car the police didn't need the footage.

got it as I'm on the southern motorway in Auckland twice a day, and like you, thought it would be good for evidence in any "altercations"

Have used it to record road trips and my son adds music to them and plays them in fast forward like some of those "Music Videos" and has uploaded some to his Facebook

How well do they work at night? A useful feature would be a button to say "take a photo". Having it plugged into cigarette lighter all the time would be a bit annoying.

I've got a Uniden iGoCAm 300
I don't recommend it. Pretty clunky and un-intuitive to use. The clip lengths it produces tend to be rather random and sometimes skips and jumps, even with a class 10 SD card.

That's what I found too, so I modified the passenger reading light (the voltage regulator fits nicely into the cavity above it) and mounted the camera behind the mirror, meaning no dangling cables and I can switch the cam on/off separate from the ignition.

Pretty rubbish - some have IR leds on them but they tend to work till the end of the bonnet and no further. Those with Dynamic enhancements cause picture degrading. So easier to just forget night work. Unless its within your headlights or a well lit area

I got a dual Ciggy output for all my toys. Needing USB charger and camera and sometimes radio scanner etc. No biggy to chuck a cheapo dual port in. Modern cars often come with 2 now, or an extra stashed in the centre console box

My unit come with a 3 or 5m cable. I run it behind the dash, up the window frame behind the rubber seal, across the roof seal and pop it out right where it sits tucked behind the rear vision. They can be rather stealthy if you take the time.

It has the added advantage of a copy nokia battery and can do a few days on that if I need to use the lighter ports for other things.

Googling did not find any references to this "law".

I doubt it has anything to do with car cams but more like videoing people without their consent and uploading it. As result of cold war secret police experiences, the Germans are very pro privacy.

Doesn't nz law allow photos/films in public places anyway ?

I use DailyRoads Voyager app on my S5, on occasion. Seems to do the trick. Can review, photo, GPS speed etc,.

My thoughts are no longer my own and is probably representative of our media-controlled government

G1W/G1W-c seems to be pretty regularly recommended - and has ok night performance (from reviews).

Been tempted to buy one - but can't really justify it apart from wanting a toy.

It's kind of grey, but black and white. In public places, people do not require permission to take video/photo and subjects have no copyright rights or standing to stop you from doing so. Being in a public place is perceived to have an out that comes with it that you are expected to be in the public eye, and exposed.

Backyard sunning or private locations however... is why the CAA want to move to new rules with UAVs where subject permission is required for drones in urban areas.

As for on the road.. debatable if it is still classed as a public space or not. Would need a lawyer to chime in.

But if you ever capture something of nature where it can be used for legal matter, be prepared to stand up in court! (cyclist vs dashcam recently in CHC is a good example). In general the police won't want to know about video of this or that idiot, unless it makes things clearer for them, or you are ready to be a witness in any proceedings.

And anyone disagreeing to your putting it in the public eye like on the 'shocking' FB pages can still fall back on defamation claims against you if you go abusing them or simply not labeling things 'alleged' etc. Couple have been dragged across coals for it going public on media from such pages.

http://www.dashcamtalk.com and the forums keep up with the models released and have reviews/issues etc. Just watch for the chinese knockoffs of the knockoffs. Same outside casing, Rubbish encoding/file type/codec and supposed HD video aspect ratio is the giveaway.
