No self respecting human with testicles should own a MX5, it's a ladies car.

I'll be sure to let the guy I know that races one with a twin supercharged Lexus V8 in it that he's actually driving a ladies car.

What an absurd statement. They're brilliantly designed, cheap, reliable, FUN to drive and good looking. I guess if that's your definition of a ladies car, then fine.

Cheers - N

laughing Its all good, i'm sure there is enough room for my testicles. An MX5 is not that small a car. Thanks for your concern though.

What was it Jeremy Clarkson said about the Ford StreetKa?  It was something like:

'Ford say they expect 60% of StreetKa sales will be to women.  We are wondering who the other 40% will sell to?'  With the raised eyebrow he does.

Then there are all those jokes about hairdresser cars, but to be fair, that probably applies more to the Audi TT, and softop Mini One than to the MX5, but as the original joke used to have a line about the car coming with a special shelf for 'your haridressing tools', it might apply as there's precious little room for anything else in an MX5.  (Note: I am guessing, and have not actually seen how much boot space they have.)

Ahhh... but the moment you bite on stuff like that, you have pretty much lost the argument.  You have to take it on the chin and consider it character building, and comes from folk who would really like to own an MX5 if truth be known.  As long as they could wear a disguise while driving it.

Oh yes the fish are certainly biting tonight :) Though disguise or not, I wouldn't be seen in a MX5.

Everyone knows Italian cars are the most interesting in the world, although the question is, does it outweigh the potential for horrible fiery death?

2002 Fiat Stilo ABARTH - $5999
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/fiat/auction-834007846.htm
I have one of these, has not had anything expensive go wrong yet and the selespeed AMT makes driving "exciting" to say the least.
They came fully loaded however this means there is a lot of potential for the previously mentioned fiery death.

1989 Lancia Delta HF Turbo - $5000
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/fiat/auction-826104186.htm
I know nothing about these but they do appear to be a perfect example of crazy 80's design.
Manual, turbo, sharp edges, crazy dash, hideous seats, what's not to love?

1997 Alfa romeo GTV - $1 reserve
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/alfa-romeo/auction-834944313.htm
If you can get beyond the looks apparently they are a nice car to drive with a pretty tough drive train (for an italian).

paulmilbank: As above, had an MGF, not keen for another. Whatever I get, I will be doing most of the maintenance on it, It just has to be simple and easy. Also the MGF leaks something shocking from all kinds places you wouldn't expect. We have a second car for my Wife which has loads of room so this is just something for me to go to work in and tinker with.

We nearly bought an MGF for my wife and the biggest obstacle was the roof construction, lucky enough we did a test drive in the jolly good old British rain and indeed water was coming in from completely unexpected places.
Funnily enough the dealer said the car had had 16 owners (!!).. Most people only use it for 1 season and then trade it.

And my favorite roof flaw on the MGF, which you may or may not have seen depending on the day you tried it. You can't just drop the roof due to one of the struts not folding correctly, you have to pull it back, then pull a strut forward while balancing the soft top partly open, only then will it drop otherwise it locks against the strut halfway between open and closed. They came up with a fix which was two bits of elastic to hold the strut forward when you dropped the top, but didn't ship that till much later.
I think a Japanese engineer would have been shot for that, MG Rover just said, ah, good enough, ship it in a thick northern brogue. Also if you get wet feet, it is because they used cheap open cell foam around the cabin air system where it comes into the car so that gets waterlogged and leaks almost from new. I think there could be an entire book written about amazing design choices and failures in cars designed and sold by the rover group through the years.

If the MX5 is a ladies car, then BMWs are for Drug Dealers.  Not sure about a yellow BMW though.  Are there female drug dealers out there?
