I still think I'd prefer the Aurion, if I can find one. As they aren't imports, a lot of the dealers don't have them (genuine Toyota dealers do).

NZ NEW and low kms ,and in ur budget :)

the XR6 is more powerful and drives better BUT guzzles gas a bit more, and i have no idea about reliability.

Why not a newer Skylike? I have bought a 370GT Crossover from Japan but because it took a while to find I actually bought a temporary 2006 Nissan Skyline 250GT. That's a V36 model, 2.5l V6. 232hp.

It was in immaculate condition inside and out, no wear on the seats or steering wheel. Mechanically great and surprisingly good to drive. So good in fact I almost regret going so far up the Skyline food chain for so much more money.

And it cost me $11350. It's got 100k on it, but feel MUCH newer than that.

Feels like an absolute steal. Hopefully I'll still get $10k for it when I sell it in a month or so when my Crossover arrives form Japan.

The 2.5V6 engine is a honey as well. Chain driven and smooth with no real issues against them. Go try one out - there are heaps available at great prices.

Cheers - N

BTW, anyone want a 10k Skyline 250GT in Chch in 4-5 weeks? :-)

That does seem a good deal, given Toyotas always appear to come with the "Toyota tax" and it's still low kms, but what's the handling on the Aurion like?

Personally, I'd prioritise the handling of a car over the speed, power and/or additional cylinders a car may have.

I've driven the current and three-generations back Camry, and in both cases found them too soft and imprecise, especially in the corners; given I assume that the Aurion's heavier up-front with its larger V6 engine, has Toyota done anything to the suspension etc to make it handle in a way that's more befitting of the additional power under the hood?

I honestly hadn't though about an XR6. There are a few around in my price range (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/ford/auction-848865952.htm )

What is the reliability like on these now? I had a (much older) Fairmont in the early 2000s (1990-1 model I think) and it was both thirsty for gas and hungry for repairs. It had done over 200,000k though.

At the moment work pays for all of my gas, so fuel economy isn't top of the requirements, but I think buying a 4L car is a little irresponsible (tempting though).

That is a good buy.

Admittedly, I haven't driven a Camry or Aurion. I'd expect the Aurion to handle differently being rear wheel drive, hopefully a bit better balanced.

Aurion is NOT rear wheel drive, it's a front driver
Also, it is very boring as a car, comes with a cardigan and slippers in the boot :-)

I'd look seriously at the Mazda 6/Atenza, new shape is 2.5L, plenty of power, great economy, same size as Aurion and it's not Grandad's car

Yep, it's really just a V6 version of the Camry, which is also front-wheel drive. Neither are really suitable for people interested in cars as something more than getting from A to B; the solid, dependable Toyota brand is what sells.

Check out the OP's OP! Budget's around $15k - as discussed earlier, this will get a good-condition 1st gen Mazda 6 (2.3l), or perhaps a higher mileage 2nd gen 6 (2.5), but certainly not the current model! Neither of the previous generations were particularly economical, though - something they've really sorted out with the current range (the petrol being not that much more fuel-hungry than the diesel - 6.5 or something like that versus 5.4 or so).

I would avoid the XR6 myself had one for 10 days in aus a few months ago 2014 model, Seemed cheap and plasticy on the inside and just cheap overall, Didn't pay much attention to fuel consumption but didn't look terrible, Also seemed to be lacking in power compared to the 2012 commodore we have here.

As for the Commodore we have had 2 in the last year (1st was a write off) and I love it, 2008 model before the 2012 and both have been more than ample in the power department, Both fun to drive if a little rigid, 2012 model somehow seems to use less petrol than my 2002 2.5L V6 Skyline, Probably a benefit of SIDI.

The Accord/Inspire really are brilliant value. A much more premium interior than the Aurion, although they do feel like a large car in the city.

If I wasn't in Adelaide I'd sell you our 2nd gen Mazda 6 (77,000kms) for $15k.

I hate the thing.

Nah, it's more than acceptable in the third gen, and ours is riding on the 19 inch rims (eg http://www.torquenews.com/sites/default/files/image-106/%5Btitle-raw%5D/dsc_6086.jpg)

And compared to my wife's Jazz on the open road it's but a whisper!
