I still think I'd prefer the Aurion, if I can find one. As they aren't imports, a lot of the dealers don't have them (genuine Toyota dealers do).

joker97: the XR6 is more powerful and drives better BUT guzzles gas a bit more, and i have no idea about reliability.

That does seem a good deal, given Toyotas always appear to come with the "Toyota tax" and it's still low kms, but what's the handling on the Aurion like?
Personally, I'd prioritise the handling of a car over the speed, power and/or additional cylinders a car may have.
I've driven the current and three-generations back Camry, and in both cases found them too soft and imprecise, especially in the corners; given I assume that the Aurion's heavier up-front with its larger V6 engine, has Toyota done anything to the suspension etc to make it handle in a way that's more befitting of the additional power under the hood?
petercad: Aurion is NOT rear wheel drive, it's a front driver
Also, it is very boring as a car, comes with a cardigan and slippers in the boot :-)
I'd look seriously at the Mazda 6/Atenza, new shape is 2.5L, plenty of power, great economy, same size as Aurion and it's not Grandad's car

I honestly hadn't though about an XR6. There are a few around in my price range (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/ford/auction-848865952.htm )
What is the reliability like on these now? I had a (much older) Fairmont in the early 2000s (1990-1 model I think) and it was both thirsty for gas and hungry for repairs. It had done over 200,000k though.
At the moment work pays for all of my gas, so fuel economy isn't top of the requirements, but I think buying a 4L car is a little irresponsible (tempting though).
joker97: lol what's wrong with it? road noise and harsh ride?
joker97: no, that's what the reviewers always say. i love the look of the new 6, a poor man's aston martin! but the reviewers always say - road noise, harsh ride ... so they must be right then ...
