I'd second the earlier post about looking at a Commodore.

We looked at a new Aurion and VE Commodore a couple of years ago for my wife to use as her work car.  I though she'd take the Aurion but she chose the Commodore. Shes more than happy with it, plenty of get up an go when needed, it steers and rides well.

It's pretty economical, the SIDI 3.6 ones are better than the earlier 3.6 models.  It's got a lot more get up and go than my 2003 VY S 3.8 manual which averages about 10l/100km mixed town and open road running and gets down to 8l/100km on the open road.  The manual gearbox helps I think.  I've owned it for 11 years, it's done well over 300 thousand K's and still runs well.  It's been a really good car.

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

I admit I hadn't looked at the Accords, and had generally always steered away from Honda (I don't know why). I've had a couple of older Mitsubishis and the burned a lot of oil. I've stayed away since.

I don't mind getting a grandpa car - I've grown out of sporty cars anyway. The Mark X still seems to be winning (and it is Rear-Wheel Drive), but I will do some research on the Accord. The Mark X I know I can swap out the stereo/nav unit it comes with, doesn't look like I can do it on the Imported Accord (Inspire?).

The Subaru tempts me, but they generally have pretty small cabins (I'm a big guy, need the seat all the way back, and sometimes people in the back seat).

Have you checked the Lexus range? IS is Camry size and GS is Aurion size. I've seen a couple of IS350's in the $15k bracket recently, that's over 200 kw with under 6 sec to 100. WRX beating stuff! The rear seat legroom is poor in the IS 2005-2013 models though.

My 3 cents here:
a) I had MARK-II before (6 cylinder, rear drive) - same as MARK-X nowadays. It was very nice car - smooth driving, very comfortable.
b) Scanned MARK-X which was offered to me recently - 6 error codes - all referred to automatic transmission - asked the owner what they have done - they modded car from auto to manual but some sensors were left in "open" and were sending those codes. :(
c) MarkX is one of luxury cars (you can compare them to some Lexus) and hence their engine computer stores real mileage (inerasable). Cheaper cars do not do that. That means that if ODO has been tampered with in MARK-X - engine ECU keeps REAL readings. I have scanned another MARK-X - which was offered for sale as "fresh import" for $15K not yet registered in NZ - it had about 69.900 KM on ODO and was 9 year old. That ODO looked suspicious as certain details in the car interior were indicative of much more wear and tear vs what ODO suggested. Quick computer scan revealed about 400000 km recorded in engine ECU. :(

Good luck with your new MARK-X - if you find good one - scan it before you buy it.

I just bought as a second card a 2008 Ford Mondeo 34000Km , one owner for $11000  marked down from $17K.  Wouldn't have paid  $17K for it..  god awful  thirsty car at about 14 liters / 100 Km  around town. (the handbook says for a 2.3L  about 13.6 around town and 9.3 hiway)   I'm sure a V8 could do as well.  Had to buy the user manuals from Germany as ford don't sell the books here.  They also don't sell the  proper  seat covers  for the airbaged front seats so not sure if you bay after market ones.

Crikey alright, that's really dodgy.

Good tip on the ECU keeping the mileage. I'll get it scanned.

Be careful of Series 1 VE Commodores, they are prone to timing chain stretch. Mine has just started to log a fault code. There is a software fix that helps, but they'll have to get replaced eventually (at a cost of about $2,500 or more)

That's assuming it's the original ECU and hasn't been replaced with a second hand unit at some stage.

Yes, true. I'd assume though, that if a car had done 400,000kms, and the Odo was reporting well under 100,000 than there would be other obvious signs something dodgy going on (steering wheel, seat, handles would show significant signs of wear from that much driving).

Huh? The Camry and Aurion are identical in size. They're basically just 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder versions of the same car (different dashboard and different front/rear styling).

The Lexus IS interior space is closer to that of to a new Corolla.

Thanks, this serves to display my Toyota ignorance. I saw an Aurion and GS parked side-by-side one day and it is very obvious they've been in each others parts bin for rear body panels.
