Geektastic: I made zero headway negotiating on the new Outback. The only way the dealer would consider discount was if I bought more than one!

That's where brokers come in. Besides bringing a steady stream of business to the dealers, in the case of my brother-in-laws VW Golf, I think he said the broker bought eight of them at once.

Sounds like the op should call the dealers bluff and ask for the car ungroomed and still with the plastic, because if there is a grooming fee then the base cost should be the ungroomed price, in theory (obviously still have to pay WOF etc).

A bit like ticket agents charging to print a ticket yourself

oxnsox: If you're paying cash the dealer will be less negotiable on ORC.
All dealers make money on the financing, so if you buy with finance they're more likely to be flexible on the ORC

So do the finance companies pay a commission to the dealer?

I always pay cash and I was hoping that I would get a better deal due to less mucking around but I guess not!

I would highly doubt the manufacturer would allow them to sell in that condition, as it would affect their brand image to receive a new car in what is essentially an unfinished state.

When I was last at the Subaru dealer they did show me a Forester that had just arrived 2 hours previously (we wanted to see a new interior and it was the only one they had).

I can confirm it was filthy outside with mud and dirt from the delivery trip and covered in various white plastic sheets, clip on bump guards etc. Inside was also plastic covered and had a few bits needing attention.

Yeah, but that is a cost of sale, that should come out of the margin. It is just as likely to get filthy being taken on test drives etc, and they need to keep them all clean at all times anyway.

I think a good way to get a discount is to play one dealer against another. Look what other dealers are selling the same new car on trademe. Also Field days can have some good discounts. Toyota for instance seem to give some very good discounts.

We just bought a second hand late model car - and the price of the grooming, tank of petrol and new WOF were all part of the price.

If the ORC are the costs of being able to legally drive on our roads (as opposed to driving it only on your own private test track), I can't imagine why taking off the protective plastic would be considered an ORC, any more than the cost of delivery or the cost of putting oil in the engine or the cost of installing seats would be.
