If I was in NZ, it would be $134.95 to register my VE Commodore.

Alas, I am in Melbourne and it costs me just under $800/year

That's depressing if it's true, given the safety features on my car (adaptive cruise, blind-spot, rear-traffic...) - however I still can't find this information anywhere from the link above (and having read the earlier post as to where the infomation is linked from) - where did you get the $234 amount from? If it's from the link above, which is to my specific car, it could relate to it being a diesel.

Why would be being a diesel make it less safe though?

I cannot see how this car is in the same ACC band as my 1999 1-star crash rated Mazda Demio.

Because the government has never got around to fixing the differences between diesels for commercial use, and diesels for private car use. Is there some ACC or other charges on the petrol, that isn't charged on the diesel? I have got rid of my diesel for this very reason, no point in owning one unless you do big mileage these days IMO.

I think I recall hearing sometime ago that the Road User Charges and higher rego for diesels are there instead of the "road tax" component in petrol, hence why diesel fuel is so much cheaper per litre. The rationale for this being that farmers (and other diesel vehicle owners ) whose vehicles don't use public roads don't have to pay for something they don't use.

The first 5 days after the weekend are the hardest.
