Having now purchased another car, I am left with my old car to find a new home for.
Because of its age, and a couple of small issues I am leaning towards something like Turners "Cash Now"

Anyone have any experience using this service, or another other alternatives out there (in Dunedin) that are better

I am not expecting to get much for the new car - whatever I get will go towards the cost of insurance for the new car

Trademe. Price it right, it will go. FOr more than your TUrner's or other dealer's cash. GOod to know what that cash price is, so you can price it somewhere between that and retail.

i say that because there are very few cars in Dunedin. less to choose from, higher chance of sale.

Depends on your preferred return/effort ratio. Turners CashNow is simple. You take the car in, they look at it, give you a price, you walk away with the money (well, deposited in your bank generally in my experience). Takes maybe an hour. But you will get more selling it yourself, as Turners base their estimate that they will pay you on what they expect they can actually sell it for, less a profit margin.

People in the office have suggested a Facebook group, but I don't do Facebook

I figured most people would say Trademe, but .. I never have any luck selling (maybe a car will be different)

Turners (or similar) seems so much easier - yes, I might get only a few dollars for the car but its done with quickly.
Having only paid $7k for the car 11 years ago, I got my money out of it.

If I didn't have to pay rego, 2 lots of WOF/Service and Insurance (about $750 a year), I would actually hang onto it

sounds like the Turners cash price would be around $200 from your description. I guess you've got nothing to lose.

Definitely Facebook if you think the car is only worth around the 1k or so mark. Surely you must know someone with a Facebook account. There is a group on Facebook called cars for sale Southland.

Because dealers have to garuntee even cheap cars due to the CGA. And the cost of a new engine or gearbox is the same on both a 1k or a 10k car. Your car would only be worth scrap value to them.

This is the Civic you're on about I take it? If it's in reasonable condition you might get 2-3k for it on TradeMe. They are a good first car/general hack.

I sold my 95 corolla to Turners. Looking at expired listings on trademe they were going for about $1500-1700 with similar k's.
Went to Turners (Dunedin) for a valuation and they offered me $1400 cash. They were happy for me to defer that for 2 weeks. I did my own research including talking to the dealer where I was buying a new car to see what they would offer me. They said "We'd give you $500 or so. If Turners are offering $1400 then take it and run." So I did.

Turners thought it would go for $2200 to $2600 at auction but if I allowed for sale fee's and a proper clean up then I still wouldn't have received much more than $1400 in hand.

Summary: Take it to Turners, see what they say, then make a decision. You don't have to decide straight away.

We traded our old car in when we bought the other week, just wanted rid of it. In the 3 weeks we traded it, we got $500 from the dealership, he sold it to his other guy for $500, he put it on trademe and sold it to another dealer for $1610 and that dealer has now put new hubcaps on and taken out the old mats and is trying to sell it for $2600.

What is scary when i started following it was the answer to some questions like when was the cambelt done?- he said it was done at 101,000km. It's a chain driven car and if look at his other answers for other questions on the same topic they all got done at either 101k or 201k. These dealers are looking to prey on people with no money/no knowledge as the buyers (going from feedbacks) are welfare etc people who are just going to have trouble with these old cars.

Also there was a few problems with the car when i traded it in and they are no where mentioned on trademe apart from it runs well.

DODGY car salesmen.

I woul; sell on trade me, as is where is. They can choose to get an AA test on it. Or you could get an AA type test on it so they know what needs doing to it. The problem is that you may have a car worth 2k, but it may need 3k or work doing on it, which would mean that they buyer will try to beat the price down alot. So you are best to sell it with the defects known.

That is why they transfer it between them, so anything that was disclosed at trade time was not told to the person selling the car. it was probably sold in a bulk lot of low cost cars to another dealer AIWI so that the new dealer only has to disclose problems that they are aware of with their quick inspection and probably very friendly WOF issuer mentions. If a cambelt sticker appears on the car at some stage the person selling it is going off that information and not lying, they are just saying what they see on the car that they bought and are now selling.

And people wonder why noone trusts used car dealers.

Cheers for that
Maybe I will get lucky and get a better value on it than I would think they would give me
