I wonder, can you use an EV as a UPS as well? Power goes down at home, plug in your car and keep the fridge/PC/TV going?


I believe this was the plan with the Leaf.  You'd drive it around and it would power your house when you came home.  Not sure if it was the Leaf or another brand of factory EV.

OK guys step back and for once put yourself in the position of other users of our roads, car parks, parks etc. Also put your self in the position of the Blind and disabled.

As for this "You WILL just have to get used to looking before you walk out in to the street no matter what idiotic"  so the blind will just have to look ???????

Its not about taking your toys away its about respect and safety for ALL in our COMMUNITY

I think it was Elon Musk (Tesla) that was really keen on making the car able to power the house. Hadn't heard of others planning this so much. Though now you mention it - I think the Mitsi PHEV was having some development done to enable this sort of this as well.

Tesla also seem to be moving into the home powerpack business as well - I guess they will have a huge battery production facility (think it was a collabaration with Panasonic)

City noise - try driving around a city centre - 95% of pedestrians seem to have their eyes on their smartphones and/or ear buds in their ears. You could have a full brass band playing and they don't know. Have seen a pedestrian try and walk in front of a fire engine with the sirens on and they didnt seem to notice it until the last second.

Seriously - they do need to make a little more noise to alert people - but not too much though. I think any added artificial noise cuts back as the speed increases due to road noise being loud enough.

Absolutely, there is no need for an artificially sound whilst driving the urban motorway at 100km/h. The sound emission could be emitted between 0 to 60 km/h and there could also be motion sensors that would activate them but they could be
difficult to calibrate.

As for those wear head phones, hmmm I personally this that is crazy to do while negotiating a busy city on foot, cycle, wheelchair or car.

I'm not sure if this is really practical. It assumes you have some spare capacity in your EV.

When you get home from work, you'll presumably have a near-flat battery in your car. If you immediately begin charging it when you get home (in case there's a power cut), you'll be contending with ovens, etc at peak usage and potentially make a power cut more likely. If your battery takes a few hours to charge, it'll be fairly useless for TV & lights, unless you're a very late-night person and it's a very late-night power cut.

And when you get up in the morning, your car will be flat and you won't be able to drive to work.

You could surely have it optional? Flick a switch if you need the power from the car?
It would be invaluable in an emergency (where you didn't need to drive your EV away).

Hmm ... so how do disabled people cope with cyclists and runners ?  Do they have to be fitted out with speakers too ?  You seem to have latched onto an issue that doesn't need it's own solution, whatever process a disabled person uses for other road hazards also applies to EVs.

The quietest car I have ever (not) heard was a steam car driven at an open day at MOTAT, Auckland.
I think it was a Stanley steamer, c. 1910.
All I could hear has a gentle hissing sound when I stood next to it - but I heard nothing while it was in motion.

Hmm ... so how do disabled people cope with cyclists and runners ?  Do they have to be fitted out with speakers too ?  You seem to have latched onto an issue that doesn't need it's own solution, whatever process a disabled person uses for other road hazards also applies to EVs.


Ever looked at a cyclist, runner and compared them  to a motor vehicle?

The blind use a sense to detect cars etc its called hearing.

Can I ask why do people think it is such a bad thing that EV's are fitted with a device that will emit a low volume sound to save lives?
