Not my vehicle, but I did rent this Renault Megane RS 265 in Sydney at the weekend. I have to say it was one of the most exciting cars I have ever driven - right up there with the Ferrari 458 Italia I drove on the track in Vegas, but about $375,000 cheaper lol

The best bit is that I drove it to my mate's place in the Hunter Valley on a fantastic windy back road. The handling is out of this world and the torque is ridiculous - the ESC was working overtime just to stop the wheels spinning in 4th gear at 80kph when I put the hammer down to overtake. I could never own one - my licence would last all of 5 minutes cool

Seriously, if you ever get a chance to drive one, just do it! It cost me AUD$202 for a 4 day weekend from Hertz. You can barely get a Corolla for that price. I have already booked it for my next trip over there in April.

Auto or Manual ?

6 speed manual of course!

Now we talkin!!!

Fun.

You should have got a Red one - much faster :)

My Daily drive is similarly specced, but Japanese - 196kW, 6 speed manual (Mazdaspeed Axela). I still grin when I punch it, and it can push me back into my seat in any gear (but especially 3rd and 4th).

We are going to Europe next year and are going to lease a car from Renault Eurodrive. Pity there is going to be three of us, otherwise I'd try for a Megane RS.

Well, since I posted at the start, the Toyota Avensis Verso died, so sold it and we got a 2010 Mazda Premacy wagon, and also bought back my 2004 Nissan Wingroad wagon. And have just sold the Wingroad again since I no longer need a vehicle (again).

In a few weeks I get to drive around Hampton Downs in one of these :)

Batman: How did you rent the Renault for so cheap?

Originally it was quoted at $273 from 8am Friday to 5.30pm Monday, but then Jetstar cancelled my flight (that's a whole other story). I didn't end up getting to Sydney until 8pm Friday. In the intervening time I logged into my Hertz account and amended the booking. When I did that, the daily rate dropped, so apart from renting it for a day less, the actual daily rate also reduced. I can only assume that maybe they treated it as a new last minute booking at a cheaper price?

Either way, I don't know why they offer it so cheap. I am a Hertz Gold Club member but I am unsure whether this affects pricing. But to give you an idea, I have booked it again for 5 days in April next year and it is $383. A bit more than this time, but still well worth it.

Just as a FI, you may not get that generation of Megane RS again. New one has been released, and Renault Oz have it as coming soon, then a case of how quickly Hertz fleet is updated.

I have been looking for a new toy for about two years now. I contemplated an Electric or Hybrid Vehicle, a new or second hand Lexus, even a Nissan Leaf. But nothing was enough to make me hit the "buy me" button until I saw the color scheme and car to make me walk up and say "I want that".

Sadly I have no idea how to upload a pic onto Geek zone from my phone, but trust me when I say, a burgundy and cream leather Jaguar XF is pretty damned hard to resist. And in return, this baby can't resist the taste of fuel. Incredible to drive all the same. Resistance is futile, so they say.

Maybe if I use the pushbike into the office 3 days a week, I might get that fuel usage back into some sort of acceptable order. Bugger, being 60 is fun!

I pass Jaguar dealership every day - those look cool. I guess below certain age you choose cars which cost 1/3 then 1/2 of your age, and at some stage in life you start to afford cars which cost 2x of your age :-)

I seem to have a liking for wagons. Or as they call it in UK, estates. And thanks to ?Merc, shooting brakes.

Why are they called shooting brakes?

Tesla have one called a shooting brake also, of course it take an English company to do it as Americans are allergic to wagons - "I need dis 'ere truck for my armour piercing fully automatic deer shoot'n gun"

Correction: Dutch.

The original use goes back to the horse and carriage days. These days it's used loosely by manufacturers to describe a sporty estate or wagon. I think the best description of a shooting brake is cross between and coupe and an estate.

The Ferrari FF meets this description, the Mercedes do not.

But if you're saying its a mix of a coupe and estate, then I'd have said the Merc does (AMG c63).  With the sloped back.  As opposed the Audis or BMWs which tend to be a straighter roof/squarer rear door.

I guess it comes down to the definition of a coupe. In my mind a coupe not only has a sloping roof but also 2 doors. I think Mercedes has basterdised the term coupe for their sleek 4 door saloons/sedans and in turn have re-purposed the term shooting brake.
