Just tidying up some costs in my spreadsheet before I commit to anything;

Can anyone tell me what sort of cables you'd say are essential for running a 40kwh Leaf?

Can anyone with a 40kwh model tell me what sort of filters (Cabin etc) they've replaced and how often?

In term's of essential, I would only say some kind of home charging setup, fast enough to replenish your typical daily use overnight is essential. (currently I am using a 8A cord). Everything else is a luxury.

The NZ fast charge Network (with tethered cables) is now at a point where, you could make do solely relying on it for anything other than your home charging.

Ultimate setup for me would be:

  • Fixed EVSE at home (ideally 32A, but at least matching the charger in your car).
  • 8A "granny" cable to charge from a domestic wall socket. (Allow you to charge your car if you take it away on holiday your accommodation is fine with you running a cord out a window).
  • Type 2 to Type ? for BYO cable public chargers. (allow you to use)

Not meant to use one, but an adapter to plug into plug your car into the opposite type of socket's at fixed cord public EVSE's would come in handy sometimes.

Historically camp grounds served as defacto EV charging stations with the 16A blue plug. So a cable to suit that was desirable, but unless you are planning on spending a lot of time at campgrounds I think those days have passed.

In terms of cabin filters, all the leaf's use the same one, and it is cheap.

Other things you could consider budgeting for:

  • If you car isn't in english, I think paying for the English conversion (both dash and entertainment) is well worth it.
  • I brought one of the factory cord bags to to keep in my boot to keep the public charge cable tidy.
  • I brought a parcel shelf / privacy screen to go into the boot of my leaf as it didn't come with one. I prefer that people can't see into my boot.

Is there a place I could buy a parcel shelf locally for my ZE1 Leaf? I searched and searched but couldn't find a place.

Don't know of any sorry.

My car is an AZE0, and got my parcel shelf's (aftermarket) from Pepsi Auto service. There is a used (genuine) one for that body shape on trademe too. But it appears visually different from the ZE1 version.

FYI: All of the EVSE cables that are sold in NZ are obscenely overpriced. I bought a 16amp (switchable from 8-16amp) Zencar four years ago and it's still going strong

This is the one I got:

The Yen is doing magical things. So I am now at the point where things are kind of falling into place. I have to get out of my enthusiast spec Mini Cooper S (which has the JCW LSD, which makes it effectively a kart at open road speed) and free up the cash to get something on a boat!

At the moment my preference is blue or the deep red, but I'm partial to the grey.

I'm going to test an EVSE on the standard household outlet I'm planning on using to see if it can handle it this weekend, using a relative's EV.

Ordered ChargeNet FOBs today, also have to leave room in my budget for a car seat!

I'd be very concerned if any vehicle purchased didn't come with a minimum of two in the front already!

hey guys when you fire up your Leaf in the morn, what temp is the battery at?

my battery temp is always in the middle no matter how long i've left it no matter what the air temp is, could be 8C over night and my Leaf shows bang in the middle

why is my Leaf so hot?

When the Leaf was newer and the battery less crap, 4-5 bars was normal. I've noticed it gets hotter more easily as it gets older (makes sense - internal resistance increases) so sometimes 6 bars.

Of course it shat itself last week so I'm currently trying to decide whether it still goes to GVI on Friday (on the back of a tow truck) or to a wreckers who understand the value in second-hand batteries who might give me a couple of grand for it.

mine is 4-5 bars, sorry that's what i mean, should have noted bars rather than a blanket "halfway"

shouldn't it be ice cold in the morning though?

There are no temperature values shown with those bars, so 4 bars might be 8 deg, one bar might be some horrifically cold temperature like -40 deg.  I don't think that the freezing point of water has much relevance to the battery, so those bars don't start at 0 deg.

Grab an OBDII adapter and Leafspy to read out the actual battery temp. The temp will also increase if it is on charge over night.

Where in country do you live?

I'm in Dunedin and my battery in morning is mid teens for most of year if I trickle charge over night. (leafspy)
