This. Every modern diesel has an DPF (exhaust particulate filter). The clog up over time and do a burn off cycle. Generally this requires the vehicle to be traveling at 70+km/h. for 15mins+.
If your weekly typical driving doesn't involve at least one 30min+ run at open road speed, a modern diesel is a poor choice. Some cars will put on a dash light and essentially tell you to go for a special drive just to allow the DPF to burn off. Some car's don't tell you. Either way if you keep doing short trips, the DPF will clog and need to go to a service center for a manual regen, or perhaps a $2000+ DPF replacement.
Some car's do have the means to manually regen the dpf while stationary, better than nothing, but not ideal to have to leave the car reving & smoking in the driveway for between 5mins and an hour... (make sure the car is not parked on the grass as the exhaust gets so hot it can set it on fire)

Thanks.
So would you classify the CX-8 as having decent power?umm power is only meaningful if you marry it with the weight of the thing you're moving.
140kW for a 1900kg car, is the lowest kW you'd want if you are interested in overtaking lots. i'd go over 160-170kW but that's me.
if for the occasional overtaking 140kW is very decent.
the star though is that it has very high torque at very low engine revs so it will feel very responsive for normal driving. and as someone mentioned hills will feel flat and towing will feel like nothing.
Just putting my vote in for the CX-9. It's nice. I stayed away from the diesel options as I was concerned about the pollutants that diesel emits i.e. fine particles.

I just wish that my CX9 had a lager sun roof, more fuel efficient and more storage spaces/holes.
Apart from that it's pretty sweet.

Thanks. Will hopefully test drive it this weekend.
did you manage to burn some rubber?

+1 for CX-9.
We have the previous model ie. 2015 with the 3.7l petrol - so it is a bit thirsty.
It is great around town for our family of 5 and room for 7 if randoms needs a ride as well ie. school runs, sports, shopping etc.
For a large vehicle has pretty good handling - more car like than large / unstable SUV and with 204kW a good amount of power when needed.
Great for road trips ie. quiet, comfortable, roomy and a good amount of storage space for luggage etc.
3 years of ownership thus far and no repairs required - just consumables.

Yep, tried both CX-9 and the CX-8. Both are very nice.
Leaning towards the CX-8 as it’s just that bit smaller. My wife concerned about parking it, when she’s using it. On top of that, the car park at work is super narrow already.
Furthermore, 1100-1200km on a full diesel tank vs approx half on the CX-9.
It will be a company car, but they don’t pay for petrol/diesel outside of Auckland in the weekends.
A full tank would provide a lot of driving without having to refuel, spending my own money.
I really really liked the aircon in the seats (Takami version only for CX-8 and CX-9). Not sure if they’ll approve it though. Might just be the standard model.
A new version with updated interior is coming out in July.

Are you talking about a new interior for the CX8 or CX9?
We have the CX9 Takami and although the air conditioned seats were nice, it was more of a gimmick in the end and we didn’t end up using it a lot.
The CX9 is very thirsty however.
turtleattacks: I should’ve mentioned that the new generation infotainment is miles better than the old one so I would insist on getting that.

The new gen? Is that 2021?
It was OK, but I would still use Apple CarPlay for navigation purposes.
