It must be really annoying if you are an EV car salesperson extolling all of the advantages of buying one their cars and then someone who really knows what they are talking about says that things are not as rosy as you make them out to be .
Brilliant article and the one on recycling linked on that page.

To be honest given there have been no reports of large number of 2011 leafs dropping dead from battery failure, I think its probably something best lest worried about,

This data out of the US indicates that its expected that an average original 24KWh Leaf will happily do 100,00Km and have a 60-80% SOH

I'd give this a +10 if possible. A concise definitive article about the long life of older leaf batteries.

Even shows the outliers. Can't get any better for rock-solid numbers, instead of anecdotes.

Makes me feel even better about buying an electric vehicle.

Currently I'm busing to work, because I got tired of the stress of rush-hour and parking costs, so it'll have to wait.

+1 @wellygary too
However I'm more interested in time on x-axis, than distance. Doing 100,000km over 1 year isn't the same as over 10y with the 24kwh Leaf battery - my view of the data I've seen over last 3y is to expect to have much better SoH at the end of the 1y scenario.
Regardless, a 24kwh Leaf with good SoH for around $12k is very likely to give back that money in saved petrol over the course of it's remaining life.

While I still have 12 bars and 91.12% SOH, the savings can be big. See graphic below, extracted from FlipTheFleet. This data is compared against all other Gen1.2 24KWh models

Should also note that those savings are based on the fuel bill for a similar sized & specced ICEV. In our case the actual savings are a bit less than that because I used to drive a Swift, but on the other hand now we only drive the Pajero once every couple of weeks when we absolutely need two cars at once.

In actual fact, the Leaf is cheaper to drive than my wife's motorbike, which she learnt to ride just after we bought the Leaf and were appalled by how much fuel the Pajero was using by comparison. Weekend family driving is now in the Leaf too.

Tesla's software updates: Dashcams and Atari and navigation, oh my!
By Sara Barker

Tesla is has rolled out a new software update that includes features like dashcam capabilities, better climate controls, obstacle avoidance, and even in-car gaming.

Tesla Software Version 9.0 is what Tesla is calling its ‘most substantial update yet’ for the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles. We take a dive into some of the new features, starting with the dashcam.

* Cameras – cameras everywhere!
...
* Obstacle-aware acceleration (at slow speeds)
...
* More navigation info about where you’re supposed to go
...
* Tesla Mobile App updates
...
* Other updates
...
And finally if you’ve got time to burn while sitting in a carpark, you can hunt around for easter eggs in the form of Atari classic arcade games. The touchscreen and steering can be your controllers.

Bah, damn Americans,.... Pole position is and has always been a Namco game......  Atari were the US distributor, but had no actual involvement in its creation....

Out of nowhere comes "Rivian".

They have announced a ute and an 7-seater SUV.

The specs are amazing, with battery up to 180kWh and torque up to 1400nM.

The company is based in the US and the UK, so there is hope for a RHD version.

Check it out. This is the sort of vehicle that will push the major automakers to offer electric utes and SUVs, something they are not lifting a finger to do at the moment....as they abandon the sedan market to Tesla and others.

As noted yesterday GM are abandoning the sedan market almost altogether (sic).  And Ford are chopping the sedan offerings too.  But electric SUV's are on offer.  Jag's ipace, Audis etron and Merc's EQC just to name three.  But let not the facts get in the way of a good story.....

The SUVs you mention are all very expensive....and this one may be as well.

But the real news here is the ute.  No one else is offering ute for general sale. Voltra are selling for use down mines...and they are converted Toyota Hilux.

Riva's Ute price target is US$69k targeting 2020 for product release. USA production in ex-mitsubishi plant in Illinois. Riva will show the ute at LA Auto this December.

Meantime Trump threatens to end a GM electric car consumer subsidy - due to expire anyway

I expect Trump is about to start talking about a package for GM electric car production in USA. Or just more wind.. who can tell.

Bollinger will be offering their truck in both jeep and ute versions too.

This news is from across the ditch, but it could flow here and might mean next years IONIQ could be in for a price drop?

https://www.motoring.com.au/razor-sharp-pricing-for-hyundai-ioniq-115799/

"Hyundai has gone from green zero to zero emissions hero, announcing slick pricing for its three-model electrified IONIQ range.

On sale now and offered in Elite and Premium equipment grades across three powertrains, the Hyundai IONIQ starts at $33,990 for the Hybrid, $40,990 for the plug-in hybrid and $44,990 for the battery-electric version (all plus on-road costs).

Premium versions of each are $38,990, $45,490 and $48,990 plus ORCs respectively"

A base 28kwh Ioniq @$45K AUD would equate to $53K NZ (~.90c exc +5% GST) that compares to the current $59.9 K list here currently...
