SaltyNZ: We may or may not be awash in 'cheap oil' right now - if so, I haven't seen it; petrol is still around $2.10-$2.20/L around here - but the thing about oil is that a) it is going to run out, b) most of it is controlled by the most unstable, human-rights-abusive regimes on the planet and c) Mazda notwithstanding, most global manufacturing groups are going all out on EVs in the next 5 years. If Tesla went out of business tomorrow, that would be sad, but it isn't the end of EVs.

In fact, even Mazda is currently in a partnership with Toyota to exchange their SkyActiv engines for Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Looks like there will be plenty of oil around for a while yet. The second and third to last paragraphs tend to sum it up.

Yesh, Saudi Arabia being the last one standing with oil should even be greater motivation to wean our selves off it. Once Saudi is the last one with oil you don't expect them to give it away as cheap as they presently do, do you? Besides that is no excuse to keep burning it - we need oil for plastics and fertiliser for the foreseeable future. The simple fact is that there is already too many people on earth to be feed without synthetic fertiliser. You can be as organic as you like, it simply won't produce enough.

Saudi is rather like England of 18th century - it has a higher-than-thou attitude and is spending huge sums of (oil) money promoting religion (Islam) in the rest of the world including N.Z. This projection of their ideals, cash and stroppiness has caused issues in northern Thailand and is in part to blame for triggering the Rohingya refugee crisis. Not to mention the crisis in Yemen. Saudi, has shown no compassion for even their Muslim brothers, accepted no Muslim refugees from Syria, a conflict they fermented - they have pushed the refugees north into Europe and all the poor people drowning along the way are acceptable losses. Saudi Arabia is a pretty unsavoury world citizen who are only tolerated because of their oil.

This thread probably as good as any @maxeon but perhaps now's the time to start a Tesla thread?? Akin to the Leaf one. Not sure if many Tesla owners in GZ though...

That would be awesome if we can discuss about Tesla only in a separate thread from fellow GZ members if there are a few.

I am an owner - any questions about buying one, let me know - more than happy to help. More than happy to set up a separate thread if people want one? If so, a separate leaf thread should be set up by a leaf owner as well I guess?  Thoughts?

There is a Leaf thread, albeit hasn't been labelled "owner". Perhaps that's the way to go, just separate Tesla thread, rather than for owners per se.

Thanks. A separate thread would be awesome. I have a 2018 Model X 75D and do not have EAP or UHF sound. Had an option of trialing EAP and lost it now and checking with Tesla soon to see if I can have it now.

Carbon emissions + it's ugly stuff to deal with for maintenance and transportation. It's time we moved this kind of debate to a separate topic and keep this one for actual electric vehicle release and operation news. Hard to do in practice.

Why Tesla Just Purchased An Ultracapacitor Company

"Tesla has a habit of acquiring companies that it feels will help it achieve its goal of accelerating the switch to clean, green, zero emissions transportation and energy.

So when it announced its latest acquisition - California-based Maxwell Technology -- we sat up and took notice, because Maxwell is known for its Ultracapacitors.

But what are Ultracapacitors, and what could Tesla want with them?"
