huckster:

kingdragonfly: I thought this was funny.: Renault Twizzy "F1" at a mere NZD $58,000

I thought that was a lawnmower conversion at first glance.

Or a new road sweeper for the local council...

I thought most of NZ First supporters used EVs: mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, and golf carts...

Stuff: NZ First blocks last part of electric cars policy as Greens fume

The last part of the Government’s strategy to get more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road has been blocked by NZ First.

Green Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter said the policy won’t be proceeding ahead of the election, saying NZ First blocked progress on it.

Last year the Government announced an ambitious two-pronged scheme to encourage people to purchase more EVs and fewer fossil-fuel cars. The first prong was the clean car discount. This made clean cars cheaper by charging a levy on polluting cars, which would be used to subsidise cleaner cars.

NZ First put the kaibosh on that plan earlier this year, but negotiations continued over the second part of the policy, called the clean car standard.

@kingdragonfly - Yeah. It's annoying NZ First is playing politics with emissions.

Agree

They always get the 5% threshold on election day despite polling below leading up to it. I feel they will fall over this time as if you were forced to describe NZF is one word (good or bad) it would be obstructive. Thats been the theme since day one, muscle flexing.

I emailed Tracy Martin about it when they blocked the first part. She replied that they told the Greens to take it to the election. I guess at least they're being consistent on this - which in a sane world means that if the Greens get back then NZF can't say the people don't want it.

But they will say its still not a good idea, keeps NZF in the news. The better option is dont vote NZF

It's frustrating when it happens to something you want, but forcing compromises is a feature built into MMP and I think in the long run it's a good thing. We might come back next year and find that the new government took on board all the criticism of the original proposal - and there was plenty to criticise - and it's much better than it would have been had it just gone through. I mean I for one think the clean car targets as originally stated were pretty weak.

Not much chance of that, I assure you. It would've been two ticks Green because this is a very safe National seat here so ordinarily it wouldn't have mattered who I voted for. But this time around I suspect a reasonable chance the local Labour candidate Marja Lubeck could knock Mark Mitchell off his perch so I'll vote for her for the electorate and Green for the list.

The announcement this morning of Rio Tinto's plan to shut down Tiwai point smelter is going to change the shape of NZ's electricity generation and supply landscape. The excess generation that will result should make electricity cheaper to consumers (flying pigs?) and prompt an increase in uptake of Electric Vehicles. No excuses along the lines of "where will the power come from for them", and this has to also remove any need for Huntly to be burning coal. Win, win.

The downside, apart from the redundancies in Southland, is that introduction of subsidies or other incentives for PV installation will be unlikely for the foreseeable future.

I actually doubt it...

The key consideration for people buying electric vehicles is the cost of the car not the cost of the fuel....

The excess of electricity should present a prime opportunity for the government to justify EV incentivisation including purchasing subsidies. So, cheaper EVs?

As EVs approach parity of (purchase) price their uptake will become a no-brainer to many people. They're far cheaper to run and in many cases faster than ICEs. The limiting factor is likely to be local availability.

Yes, but if the big deal is emissions, you will get lower emisisons if the masses can buy pre owned EV's. More can afford a $20k car than a $60k car, and if we wait for price parity there is another 5 years lost
