... Could also pull a few sales from the likes of the outlander PHEV and Rav4 Prime.

Speaking of RAV 4 Prime, it looks like Toyota Australia won't be bringing it to the Oz market due to what they're picking as a significant price increase over the current RAV Hybrid models. They don't believe it will sell in other words. Anyone heard what plans (if any) Toyota NZ have?

60km's battery only range would cover 90% of my driving, but if it is pitched in the $70k bracket the Ozzy's are right... I'd rather have a Tesla, or Ariya for that matter.

Edit: typo...

The Prime has the spec's to demand a decent price premium. It's the second fastest accelerating car in toyota's lineup (behind only that NZD101k 6 cylinder turbocharged Supra), has a decent electric range, along with the normal rav4 stuff (AWD, boot space, ground clearance etc).

In The USA Rav4 hybrid prices Range from $29,470 (LE) to $38000 (Limited), and the prime from $39,220 (SE) to $42,544 (XSE). (Note Toyota has option packages in the USA that have additional cost). Also note that in the USA this car has enough range to qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit, so will be quite compelling buying.

If we take the lowest spec's the price preimium is about 1/3. Rav4 GX Hybrid in NZ is $43,500 driveway. Increasing that by a third gives $58k.

If they can hit that price-point I think it will be a compelling offering.

I wouldn't read too much into the Aussie situation. Aussie have never been big EV fan's. A combination of high temperatures (bad for uncooled leaf battery packs), an expensive, dirty power gird, power supply issue in some states, cheaper fuel, unavailable of cheap used imports etc, have all aligned to them not being very popular.

Big issue with the Rav4 prime, is that it is going to be very difficult for anybody to get there hands on them. Apparently only 5000 units are going to the USA in the first year, and waitlists are largely already full (Toyota sells around 100,000 Rav4's in the USA annually.).

Europe is going to start fining automakers who can't get there average fleet emissions below a threshold, so naturally many automakers are prioritizing that market for their plug in products.

Will be interesting to see if NZ gets a reasonable allocation. Surprisingly we do seem to get a decent number of Kona's despite there being a global shortage, and minimal incentives here.

kingdragonfly: 2020 Renault Zoe: In-depth full road test

Electrifying (with Tom Ford)

The Renault ZOE is a very nice car as long as you don't need a big car. The 50kWh new model has great range (280-300km easy) and can DC fast charge with CCS2. The battery is actively cooled.

The price is very reasonable. In Germany, with incentives, they are very cheap. Like cheaper than ICE cheap.

Hopefully after the election the new government will be able to get serious about EV incentives. It's long overdue.

Gizmodo: US fossil fuel companies are beginning to fall behind on their loans

On Tuesday, Wells Fargo [the world's fourth-largest bank] posted a quarterly loss for the first time since 2008

...47% of the second quarter delinquent corporate loans were tied up with oil and gas companies.

JPMorgan [the largest bank in the United States and the sixth largest bank in the world] saw its revenue fall 70% in the first quarter this year, in part due to dip oil prices.

..After briefly going negative earlier this year, the price of oil has rebounded a bit. Just not to levels needed to make drilling profitable. The Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank saw oil production dip sharply last quarter in the region it looks after as well. That region covers a huge swath of the Midwest and Southern Plains, including all of Oklahoma, one of the epicenters of the fracking boom.

Companies included in its survey said they would need oil to get up to $US51 per barrel to be profitable. That’s not really happening, though, with oil camped around $US40 per barrel. That means more companies are at risk of defaulting on loans or laying off workers to cut costs, something even massive companies like BP are doing. Or both.

It also raises the chances that we could in fact see banks get in the oil business themselves, taking over the fossil fuel companies that default. Wells Fargo was among a group of large banks scheming to do just that in April. It feels like a lifetime ago, but the prospect of bank-owned oil and gas companies is now a good bit closer to the horizon.

Top Gear: The Seat El-Born is now an electric Cupra hot hatch

It's the first electric hot hatch spun from the VW ID.3's platform. Excited?

Technical details are pretty sparse at the moment, with Cupra releasing a small bundle of stats that are fairly new to the hot hatch world. It’ll do 310 miles on one charge from a 77kWh battery, while you can juice it up to around 160 miles of range with a 30-minute rapid-charge.

There’s no claimed power output just yet, though logic would suggest it’ll present a jump on the ID.3’s 201bhp. Not only because this is an overtly more sporting thing, but because the VW achieves a 342-mile range with an identically sized battery. Cupra hasn’t claimed a 0-62mph time for the El-Born, either, but it’ll hit 31mph in a quoted 2.9secs. Which is pretty flipping brisk, really, and a stat that bears far more relevance to real life if we’re being honest.

The El-Born’s other big news is that it’ll be the first car on the VW Group’s electric hatch chassis to deploy DCC adaptive damping, linked to a suite of drive modes and a ‘Cupra’ button that surely stiffens the setup and frees up all the power.

A bit OT, but I think still of interest to those interested in EVs:

It appears that we've reached peak oil price. Who knows, now there's no point in fighting over oil, peace might break out in the Middle East.

Props to Audi on beating Tesla to getting fast charging in Tauranga for its customers. They may even do the same with Wellington:

Tesla has had the Tauranga & Wellington superchargers as "Coming soon" for the last 2 years.

They were fighting each other non-stop in the Middle East for thousands of years before the discovery of oil.
