Thats what you have a home battery for.

At $17k for 13.5kW thats a huge payback period

You could get around twice that capacity for ~$12k by buying LiFePO4 cells from China.  Buy 32 x 280Ah cells and set them up as 16s2p and you have a nice 48V with 560Ah battery.  Get some charge controllers & solar panels and add some inverters and away you go.  You would probably need some expert help in setting up a grid-tied system, but I'd guess the solar installer people know how to set that up.

I've been daydreaming about a setup like that for a motorhome with a couple of 4,800W (continuous) inverters.  It would be able to power pretty much any appliance (A/C, water heater, oven, stove, dishwasher, etc) for a little while at least.  I'd want to be able to charge from solar, mains or alternator.

My big difficulty with something like this is the quality of batteries (or anything else) you get from China. One dud cell would hamstring half your battery, I'm thinking. One in each bank could make for a very poor battery? Perhaps buy your batteries and test them. Put the best ones in one half of your battery, the worst in the other, and you have a perhaps 400Ah battery? Or buy some extras to get 32 good cells?

Yeah ... you take a risk whenever you buy something from AliExpress. I'm willing to take that risk for small amounts of money, but I'm not going to spend $10K on cells just to find they're all junk and I have no practical recourse.

Shouldn't this solar/home energy discussion be in its own post rather than the EV post? ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Dragging things back to topic,

"The e-208 GT will be available from $59,990 meaning, after rebate will be $51,365 plus ORCs, while the price of the e-2008 SUV will reduce from $69,990 to $61,365 plus ORCs with application of the rebate."

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/evs/125484376/peugeot-fasttracks-electric-208-hatch-and-2008-suv

Available to order from Monday, but stock is only 100 between the two models, 50kWh battery / 339km range under the WLTP test.

The Leaf with 40kwh for $60K (52 inc rebate) is beginning to look very expensive for what it is...

The beginnings of real competition: that's exactly what we want to see.

Plus it is ugly. But it possibly has better long term reliability?

The Leaf or the Peugeot? The latter has proper water cooled batteries so its long term reliability will be much better than the Leaf.

Do not buy a brand new Leaf.

I quite like the look of that e-208; but why are all these small electric cars $60k; that is a lot of money (even with the rebate).

The first Nissan Leaf was sold for $75K back in 2012 here in NZ. That had a 24kWh battery. That price now buys EVs with batteries close to 3 times that capacity (and therefore range) such as the Model 3 Tesla. Battery technology continues to progress and reduce in price but continues to be the major expense of any EV.

Its a $38k petrol car with a $22k powertrain upgrade.

Same ballpack as the cost to upgrade a MG ZS to the ev version.

About half the price differential between a Kona petrol and a 64kWh kona electric (but what a drivetrain in that one.

The Peugeot brand here is niche, and perineum priced, even if it doesn't position it that way in it's home market. I think that is just the nature of being a small volume seller.

i tested the MG. despite a petrol -> EV conversion it's amazing. quiet as heck and has every mod con. more torque than a truck.

but it got small battery, less efficient motor and slow charging.

deal breaker.

but for someone who is never going far that would be perfect.
