Senecio: I think it’s as simple as Toyota are building cars for today, rather than tomorrow. Many people aren’t ready to move to a full BEV yet and hybrids meet the needs of many people now.

I’m sure Toyota will start making full BEV cars, when the time is right. But for now, they’re making cars for the masses rather than the early adopters.

it's just most of the world is developing, not developed.

say Bangkok. 10 million people in 700km2 (25x28km = 700km2). If Toyota wants to sell cars there, it ain't selling BEVs.

But Toyota does one better than a bev, they have self charging - revolutionary. Imagine if they next came out with a car that didn’t use battery, but used some stored energy…maybe in a liquid. They’re so ahead of the curve they should be aspired to. Tesla needs to get on that band wagon…imagine how cold they’d be if the cars were not stuck to a wire to charge and could charge itself.

Who even needs liquid when you can just put a propeller on the roof and use the airflow to charge the car?

Walking and cycling are not emissions free. Respiration produces CO2, and the baked beans sourced emissions of methane helps propulsion ;p

I guess most of you cracking jokes about Toyota missed the news of all the EVs coming from them in the next few years. Including EV utes in the US.

Are they late to EVs? Yes. But I think they will sell quite a few of them fairly soon.

No we’re cracking jokes because their advertising of a self charging hybrid is taking the piss. Especially when they were so quick out the gate with a hybrid….and then just sat on the technology for the next 10 - maybe more years

kingdragonfly: Really doesn't like hydrogen passenger cars.

Why is Toyota fighting EV's and paying to stop them selling?

The Electric Viking

If we created hydrogen with clean, renewable electricity, we would need twice as much electricity as we would if we just put the electricity into a battery EV.

Hydrogen is 45% efficient.
Battery electric is 90% efficient.

Thailand will be EV-only by 2035.

I agree that their marketing of the "self charging" hybrids is stupid.

My impression from what I have read about Toyota and EVs is that they were waiting for solid state batteries to become commercially viable. I think they have figured out that the goal post keeps being kicked down the road on that, and that todays (and tomorrows) non-solid-state batteries have become good enough.

But maybe I am just giving them too much credit.

That said, most of the car manufacturers that have finally gotten on the EV train have been dragging their legs for way too long. Luckily things are starting to happen.

Personally I think my next car probably will be either a Toyota bZ4X, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. It will for sure be an EV.

At least in a traffic jam full of EVs you wouldn't be choking on smoke. Which is another reason why EVs are good even when the electricity supply is dirty.

In the USA... Converted all prices from USD to NZD, miles to KM

The Verge: Nissan cuts starting price of its electric Leaf to under NZD $42,800, Now starting at just NZD $39,100

Nissan’s Leaf 2022 range starts at just NZD $39,100, making it the cheapest mass market electric car currently available in the US, according to Electrek.

That starting price drops to as little as NZD $28,400 if you include the full NZD $10,700 US federal tax credit, for which Nissan vehicles are still eligible. These prices don’t include other charges like licensing and destination fees, or additional state-level incentives, but it’s a promising sign of how affordable electric vehicles are becoming.

The exact price difference between Nissan’s 2021 and 2022 Leaf cars varies from model to model. The entry-level Leaf S, which has a 40kWh battery, has reduced by NZD $6,100 from $45,200 to $39,100, undercutting the electric Mini Cooper’s starting price of $29,990 (the electric Mini is frequently cited as the cheapest electric car currently available in the US).

However Nissan’s biggest price drop can be found with the top-of-the-range 62kWh Leaf SL Plus, which has gone down in price by NZD $9,400 from $62,730 to $53,360

Despite the drop in price, the specs of the new Leaf cars are broadly unchanged from previous years. You should still get an estimated 240 KM of range from the 40kWh model, or between 346 and 363 KM from the 62kWh version.

However, all 2022 models now include a CHAdeMO quick-charging port, plus a portable 240-volt charging cable, which should provide more flexibility when topping up the car’s battery.

I think the safest thing to do is just look at the reduction % and translate..

The entry-level Leaf S, which has a 40kWh battery, has reduced by $4,270 from $31,670 to $27,400,

he top-of-the-range 62kWh Leaf SL Plus, which has gone down in price by $6,570 from $43,970 to $37,400.

The S is a 13% reduction and the SL plus is a 15% reduction,

This would see the 40Kw leaf in NZ go down from $62 to about $54K, ( or $46K with the rebate)

the 60e+ in NZ would go from ~70K to ~60K ( or $52K with the rebate)

That makes the 2022 Leaf very tempting. It's always nice to buy something with a history.

Given that NZ is subtropical and the south temperate climate, and rarely gets above 30, the lack of active cooling shouldn't make much difference. That is, as long as its not a second-hand Japanese car.
