Batman:

so i get to babysit a friend's leaf during school holidays.

he doesn't know much about it other than charge it and drive it, so i thought i'd ask here

Gen 2 24kwh

i plug the leafspy app and it says SOH 60.x%

when the battery is 10% leafspy says there'a 20% capacity remaining

* does that mean the car will still move when it gets to 0% since that means it will still have just over 10% actual capacity or is that a reserve that the car won't use. i have no way of finding that out without a friend with a flatbed tow truck

LeafSpy tells you the "real" state of charge. However the Leaf reserves some capacity so that you don't destroy the batteries by completely discharging them. Thus, 0% (as far as the Leaf is concerned) is when it will turn itself off, even if LeafSpy says it might have 10% left.

State of charge is different to SOH (state of health). SOH means that the effective capacity of the battery is reduced to 60% - i.e. instead of 24kWh you have around 14kWh total (and again, that 24kWh is less in practice anyway because of the reserved charge amount).

Not overly cheerful if you are in NZ and looking for an IONIQ 5

Australia has a quota of 400 until at least early 2022, so NZ should expect a total allocation of ~80-100 ???

"The first 240 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicles for the Australian market sold out almost immediately this morning, with high online traffic reportedly causing the brand's local website to crash.

A customer ordering portal went live at 9:30AM on October 12 2021, offering customers the chance to secure an example of the zero-emission SUV with a refundable $2000 deposit.

"Once we have clear visibility of vehicle supply, we intend to release a second allocation (of 160, for a total of 400) of IONIQ 5s," a representative from Hyundai Australia said. "Timing is likely to be early 2022. Customers who missed out will receive regular updates about the supply situation and timing for release of the next batch."

Bjørn Nyland. (Teslabjorn) have a review of the BMW i4. Nice looking car. A bit out of the price range I am looking at, but still looking like a pretty desirable car. Especially for the people that want a car that can drive fast.

If they specify Electric for the eventual replacement of the Crown limo Fleet, I could see BMW offering this up...

They would certainly look a bit better than the Etron SUvs that are the current EV option in the fleet...

Interestingly, Aus only offers up two models vs the five here in NZ.

https://www.hyundai.co.nz/suv/ioniq-5/overview#specifications

That includes no lower-powered variant like the 125kW / 58 kWh we’re getting in NZ (ie, the one priced $10 under the rebate limit!), which makes sense (I’m sure it’s only included for our market simply due to having something under $80k).

I’m taking one for a test drive this weekend - not sure which model they’ve got as a demo, but assume it won’t be the entry-level model (which is the only variation I’d be looking at, given I want to access the rebate); also saw another Ioniq 5 on a car transporter this morning, which makes sense if they’re already delivering…

I've noticed over the last little while a few (3-4) Tesla's parked outside a building down by where LV Martin's\Hunter Furniture used to be in Wellington.

Turns out, it's a Tesla Service centre. No visible branding on the building as yet.

Got the drive in the Ioniq 5 yesterday. As opposed to my last attempt to take a car for a test drive at the same dealership (an Outlander PHEV, where they refused to let me drive it unless I was serious about plonking down cash to buy one), this time it was clear they didn't really care about pushing it or not - basically it was a verbal run-down of liability (no paper signed!) 'here's the keys', and we were on our way. Hyundai's selling strategy with this car (fixed price etc) has clearly irritated dealers...

It was the 72 kWh / 160 kW rear drive version (second from the bottom); an adequate turn of speed, and pretty decent in that key 80-120 zone for passing, but nothing terribly exciting. Handling was ok, however the lane-keeping is overly aggressive (not an EV-related issue but still frustrating as a driver! I get the safety advantages of it but still...). Love the oodles of space and lightness of the 'cockpit' (my car seemed so overly fussy and drab when I returned to it);  I liked the use of buttons and screen-managed controls, though I didn't find it the most intuitive system. Really good legroom for rear passengers. I was somewhat surprised at how small the boot seemed, contrary to its actual measurements and watching Bjorn Nyland's banana box 'test' (which fitted more than the Model Y - I think because of the ability to move the rear seats forward). That sloping rear window cuts right into its capacity.

All up, given I'd be looking at an even more de-turned version of this in order to qualify for the rebate, I don't think I'd be happy to pay $72,000 for this; it's nice for sure, but us that's a lot of money to spend on a car, and I'd be looking for fewer compromises that hopefully the Y or other models can manage better (assuming the entry-level EV6 won't be too dissimilar). Or I'll just need to be patient for prices to drop and more options to come on the market...

I just checked over the spec sheet and there is a lot of extras listed that are not available in the AWD model or even the mid range model. No heated seats/sterring wheel ,no bose stereo,no power tail gate and lots of other features you might want, are not offered.Bit dissapointed really.

I used to own a Tesla Model 3 Performance....but it got smashed up by a druggie (many here will know this from 1about 18 months ago). AA Insurance paid out the full amount as the car was only 4 months old. Instead of buying another Tesla, I bought an MG ZS EV instead. It cost about half as much....but had enough range to keep me happy (about 230-260km depending on speed / weather / terrain).

But.....I had this Tesla Wall Connector (gen 2) that was now essentially useless. It wasn't able to charge anything but a Tesla. Even with DIP2 set to legacy.....it just ignored it. No big deal...I have a Rolec Wallpod with a Type 2 socket that is now closing on 5 years old (installed March 2017). Or I can just use a 3-pin plug as it's usually more than good enough for day to day.

Tesla now sell a Tesla Wall Connector (gen3) that is supposed to be able to charge any EV. It's $870. Pretty reasonable. It comes with a tethered connecter on 7.3 metres of cable. Type 2.

I bought one. It was installed. We set it up. This one supports wifi connection and updates from the Internet.

I charged my MG on the first attempt.  Good. But subsequent attempts that day didn't work. Hmmm.

Then the next day there was a software update to the WC....and I was able to charge the MG up to about 90%...about 3 hours.  Great! Works fine...I thought.

It hasn't worked since. Not once. The MG charges just fine on my Rolec Wallpod. I attempted setting the Tesla WC to various countries, thinking it may be some sensitivity around timing or local voltage / current.  No good.

I tried setting it other charging rates (16amp, 24amp)....and made no difference.

I tried toggling between All electric cars and Tesla only. in the seetings......hoping to maybe reset a flag in the firmware somewhere.....but it made no difference.

I tried starting a charging session on the Rolec and then quickly swapping the connector to the Tesla WC.....thinking the MG might be 'awake' and be able to negotiate through any timing issues. No good.

It's a bit disappointing.

I called Tesla. They suggested testing it with a Tesla car. I'll do that. But I did point out this device is now supposed to work with any EV....and it has actually worked twice. They also suggest I test it with a few other Type 2 compatible EVs. If it works....then it's something about the MG. If it doesn't work....It's something about the Wall Connector. They would like to know...as there are other non-Tesla owners buying this device because the price is reasonable they plan to buy a Tesla at some point soon. Be ready....but want it work with their existing EV.

I was curious about how this would go and that was one of the reasons I ordered it. I'm being rewarded with an interesting problem. :-)

That is a good price for those features. Tesla are also very proactive with software updates (in contrast to many others), so likely this will get fixed.
