A 30 minute video, which is a bit bland, but has some good background material.

Doesn't cover the Tesla’s New 4680 Battery Cell, which will debut in production in early 2022

The Story Of Electric Vehicle Batteries
New Mind

The Tesla 2170 Lithium-Ion battery cell and other high capacity lithium-ion battery cell technologies all represent the first hopeful steps in transitioning society towards a new standard in practical and economical transportation via electric vehicles.

and another 30 minute video, this time from 70 years ago. I've never heard so much orchestral music in a manufacturer's promo

CNET: Electric-vehicle maker ELMS moves out of the shadows at CES 2022

...you've probably never heard of is Electric Last Mile Solutions, or ELMS. (Pronounce it "elms," like the tree.) And at CES 2022, the company moved out of the shadows -- in short order, ELMS could become a household name... ELMS is building and delivering all-electric vans right now....

...At 4.7 meters inches long, the Urban Delivery is about the size of a Ford Transit Connect. It rolls on a 3 meter wheelbase and weighs a claimed 1,400 KG. Cargo space clocks in at a generous 4.4 cubic meters, and its maximum payload is 950 KG. (Yep, more than a ton.)

As for performance, this vehicle is no rocket: It features a 41-kilowatt-hour battery pack provided by CATL, which ELMS estimates will deliver 177 KM of range in Environmental Protection Agency testing. A single electric motor cranks out a modest 60kW of oomph, about 80 horsepower.

The top speed is a claimed 88 kph -- pretty slow, but more than enough for downtown delivery duty.

Based on its outward appearance, this van looks pretty utilitarian and oddly unfamiliar. This is because at its core the Urban Delivery is a Wuling design from China.

Taylor explained a lot of people accuse them of just importing Chinese vans but he said emphatically "that's what we aren't doing." ELMS does start with a body-in-white rolling chassis that's supplied by Wuling, because "it's out on the road with proven reliability," but ELMS reworks them significantly, adding seats, sensors and safety gear, new bumpers and headlights (everything it takes to make the vehicle street legal in the US). ELMS also installs its own electric powertrain.

Consumer Reports USA has issued a report, that you can download, by supplying an email address, that is not verified.

Consumer Reports USA found high rates of EV owner satisfaction overall.

In reliability, while the car category "electrics cars" were rated about the same as luxury compacts SUVs, while the EV SUV were bottom of the reliability rating.

2019 Audi E-tron

"in-car electronics" failure was a display screen going blank, while problems with exterior door lights in the same model constituted a "power equipment" issue.

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV. Sold as "Volt" in Australia

"electrical failure, drive unit replacement, and other faulty components."

2019/2020 Tesla SUV's . Not model 3.

Model S: "electrical failure, drive unit replacement, and other faulty components."

Model X: seals and weatherstripping

The Model X's doors have presented issues from the start. In 2016, CEO Elon Musk said he was "not sure anyone should have built or designed this car, because it's so difficult to make."

Model Y: "much worse than average" reliability. loose trim and mismatched paint

A German post said it the flaw seems to lie with a piece of third-party software that only a handful of Tesla owners use, which could allow hackers to control all sorts of functions of their cars.

ARS Technica: Teen hacker finds bug that lets him control 25+ Teslas remotely

A young hacker and IT security researcher found a way to remotely interact with more than 25 Tesla electric vehicles in 13 countries, according to a Twitter thread he posted yesterday.

David Colombo explained in the thread that the flaw was "not a vulnerability in Tesla's infrastructure. It's the owner's faults." He claimed to be able to disable a car's remote camera system, unlock doors and open windows, and even begin keyless driving. He could also determine the car's exact location.
...
Colombo says he reported the issue to Tesla's security team, which is investigating the matter.

I think the reliability stats are likely skewed by the models available in each segment (in the USA). In general, cheap, simple cars tend to be more reliable than luxury / prof romance cars with numerous complex features, and other attributes favored over reliability. Also newly released models tend to have more issue's than mature models.

Compact Hybrids / plug in catogory will have a great stats, based on the performance of the likes of the various Toyota hybrids in that segment which have a reputation of begin highly reliable.

Assume that the Electric cars category picks up a really diverse range, everything from Nissan Leaf's, to the polestar 2, to Porche Taycan's. Big volume seller the Tesla Model 3 had big issues early on in the USA factory, but seems many of those are getting resolved now it has been in production for a while.

In the Electric SUV space, many of the offerings are new. Large volume sellers the Tesla model Y, and Ford Mustang Mach-e both had high profile issues eairly on, and the segment is also loaded with luxury offings, the Jag i-pace has a partically poor repitation on that frount.

kingdragonfly:

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV. Sold as "Volt" in Australia

For clarity, the Bolt and Volt are different cars.

Bolt is a pure electric hatchback, that has only ever been offered in LHD:

Chevrolet Bolt EV: The Car Connection's Best Hatchback to Buy 2018

Was fairly cheap, and had a 150kW motor and a big battery (2017-2019: 60kWh, 2020+: 60kWh, for 383km & 417km EPA rated range respectively) - I would have likely brought one if I lived in the USA.

Volt is is a plug in hybrid, but the GM marketing team used the term "Range extended electric vehicle". Its a small sedan styled liftback. Well regarded, won a bunch of awards etc.

Gen 1 was available as LHD, and low numbers were sold here under with a holden badge. There are also a couple in NZ, ex UK with wither Chevy bolt branding, or Vauxhall Ampera branding:

Holden Volt 2013 car review | AA New Zealand

Gen 2 was only offered as LHD, and went out of production in 2019:

GM staked quite a bit on the success of the Volt during its development process, expecting sales to be slow at first. But it believed in the formula at the time. Now GM does not.

the Volt is not a hybrid in the sense of how you think it works

the petrol engine does not drive the car. it powers an electricity generator to power the electric motor.
