I recall my Dad (motor engineer) telling me that tow bars are for towing i.e horizontal drag and most manufacturers specify a vertical load limit or words to that effect. He passed away many years back so I am dragging this from the depths of my memory that is in need of defragging. It makes sense though.

They do, it's typically ~10% of the tow limit but it should be listed in the towing specs for each car under download or downforce limit.

Downforce on the ball is typically up to 10% of the trailer weight in NZ, but only about half that in Europe, so a vehicle with a European towbar may have a much lower capacity for vertical load.

Typical EU towbar is just a curved arm and ball not our tongue of 1cm thick steel etc

A heavy load on the towball will lighten the load on the car's front wheels, potentially even lifting them off the ground. Less obvious, but there does need to be a good positive downward load on the towball. If not, the trailer is unbalanced, and will tend to jackknife when braking.

Technical question. Many EVs have rear wheel motors and other electrical gubbins at the rear of the vehicle. Would this affect the installation of a towbar and or wheelchair carrier?

Sarah Milburn send us this video of her Tesla. She took out two seats in the 2nd row to fit the chair lift. She now still have 1 seat in the 2nd row and 2 in the 3rd row. As a quadriplegic Sarah Milburn is very happy with this car. She can just plug it in and doesn’t have to pump gasoline."

That is excellent. Not sure how well it would handle the weight of an electric chair though

If it could, it would be ideal. You could charge the chair in the car.

FYI: I have seen couple of days ago Toyota Sienta non-hybrid. Standard version is 7 seater, but that one was modified by Toyota in Japan with last row of seats removed (now 5 seater) and lift for the wheelchair installed.
Also Toyota modified suspension to remotely lower the car to asssist the wheelchair getting in and out.
I have already ordered Speedometer for that model from Japan and Conversion to English will be ready as soon as it arrives to NZ.

And, if the car ran out of battery, you could tow it with the electric chair. ;)

So the Hummer EV has a 246kwh battery with 212kwh or so usable. I hope they are not sold here because I dont want to get to a charger just before one of those :D

Not to mention being so large it would take up one and a half charging bays!

Though, if it does vehicle to load, maybe you could daisy chain off it while you wait.

If it charged at 350kW, then it would be fine though.  Which it probably may do, since the pack is so large, it would be easier to handle those speeds.

It should charge pretty quickly on a 350kw assuming its 800v etc etc , but we dont have that many of them yet, not that we'll have any hummers either..
