https://thedriven.io/2022/03/07/mg-jacks-up-zs-ev-pricing-ahead-of-july-launch-but-ditches-long-range-option/

MG ZS EV gets a $2k price bump in Oz and no longer range battery model for now (for us or them)..

Yip, both NZ version only get the new 51Kwh battery

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/127979596/mg-nz-announces-pricing-for-new-zs-ev

But again it totally exemplifies why we are still years away from mass market "cheap" EVs...

Manufacturers (even Chinese ones) are very happy to move up the value chain in Developed countries... rather that attempt to adopt a cheaper pricing model based on "sell 'em by the boatload"

TBH an extra $1000 for an additional 7kWh of batteries - that will probably last a lot longer than the previous ones - seems like a pretty good deal.

That's still pretty good value at $44,500 (after rebate) for the high-spec version.

If we were to be looking to replace my wife's Leaf at this point in time I'd certainly be looking closely at this, and certainly more so than the current Leaf. The range of that 51 kWh battery is fine, and well over triple that of our Leaf!

I know its a meme but no, theres quite a lot of people struggling and dont need this, its way beyond an incentive to switch to renewable/evs which just cant happen that fast.

Plus we'll be paying it also, not at the pump but for fertilizer, transport of goods, manufacturing etc etc, oil price impacts pretty much everything

Yes, oil prices affect us all, even if we walk everywhere. But maybe this time will be what we need to take that next step and get serious about weaning ourselves off oil. It's hard to be sympathetic when even blind Pugh saw this coming two decades ago and we did bugger-all about it.

I tried cutting some numbers yesterday to see how the economics of an electric vehicle purchase would play out in my particular situation. This raised a few interesting points:

  • Ability to charge at home - in my case this isn't possible as I have an apartment car park with inadequate electrical infrastructure. Public chargers appear to be much more expensive than home charging due to them having a time based charge as well as a consumption charge.
  • Depreciation - would an electric vehicle depreciate at the same $ rate or the same % rate as a combustion engine vehicle? Time will tell.
  • Insurance - presumably the higher capital value of an electric vehicle would incur higher insurance premiums?
  • Road user charges - I assume that this will be implemented eventually and it's unclear at what rate.

Depends where you are there are often free charging opportunities in public but paid DC fast charging isnt cheap. Talk to your apartment building owner about having something fitted?

Depreciation whenever talked about comes out to be lower for EVs

  • Insurance - presumably the higher capital value of an electric vehicle would incur higher insurance premiums?

Insurance to be hasnt been that bad, a newer more expensive outlander PHEV was cheaper than the outgoing Suzuki Vitara, the model 3 is $1100 a year which isnt bad tbh

  • Road user charges - I assume that this will be implemented eventually and it's unclear at what rate.

So you wont be paying any until April 2024, and then no more (and likely less) than either a petrol or diesel vehicle, it'll still work out massively cheaper.

A bit. I was thinking of the anguish over the rising price of oats to feed a horse I don't have to pull a buggy I don't have either.

History.
