The new leafs are in a weird bit of the market, they are now priced the same as SUVs but you get a hatchback for the money. Nissan either need to up their game to make them a premium product that a hatchback in that price range needs to be, or reduce the price to come in under the better equipped SUVs. We did consider a bigger battery second hand leaf but once you hit the 40kWh leafs you're bordering on atto 3 or mg zs money and I think it would be worth finding the bit extra to get the 50kwh brand new with warranty battery. Nissan could easily transition to lfp cooled batteries, if a small outfit in Christchurch can manage to do it a global player like Nissan should be able to.

It is good there's tinkerer's and companies like EVs enhanced working on the leaf so they don't just become junk when the batteries to degrade, there is still life in them beyond the battery pack. Ours are good for now but I'm definitely watching the pricing on the 16 blade battery, a 70kwh pack would be very tempting. I'd also like to see if a bigger ac charger can be had and installed easily as I get free charging at work, we have to share 1 charge point though and when there's a few people charging for an hour at 3.3kw barely seems worth the effort as it wouldn't even cover the journey one way. Other than those minor things that I honestly can live with to save a fortune on petrol the cars we liked it enough to buy a second one.

Sure, looks nice (buy this over the Atto 3 in a heartbeat), and I was thinking that is one amazing price ($16.5-20k US), but it soon became clear how they could produce an 'EV' for that price!

yeah got to the end to find out that the EV is yet to be released. but I'd buy an EV that looked like that assuming range, specs and price are reasonable

That’s not bad looking on the outside; more interesting than the MY or M3 for sure.

Noting he said Aus is down to be (one of?) the first o/s market to get this model, I wonder if it’ll also be released here at the same time. Pricing will be key, I imagine, as its sedan shape will count against it, given the MY is now available offering a lot more space for little additional cost (well, in. NZ - for the moment).

Edit: interior is definitely an improvement on the Atto 3 - sure, pretty busy (esp compared to the minimalism of the M3/My) but certainly not nearly as polarising. Will be interested to find out the quality of finishing and components.

Just physics. A Sedan vs an SUV

Probably looking at a start price of around $65,000 NZD, with the long range around $84,000.

Article in Carsguide.com.au

If you want a cheap EV from China the Atto 2 should be an interesting small hatchback that will probably be released sometime in 2023.

That should probably come to about $30,000 NZD after the rebate here in NZ.

PS: With all my posting on BYD I guess I should say that I have no interests in the company other than thinking they make interesting EVs.

Why is it any time the Chinese do anything cool or interesting, someone assumes they stole the idea? Newsflash - there are smart people outside The West as well.

It might be...if the charging networks were stagnent and new chargers weren't planned and actively being built.

The South Island has plenty of chargers. There is the odd gap for shorter range vehicles (the North Island has a few too) but they haven't be ignored - there are upcoming plans to plug those gaps.

Didn't they invent gunpowder? Something I recall from my school days :-) Or was stolen from the Brits?
